    Do not reproach me if I grow drunk, for love has

    An effect like wine's when it is poured.

    فَلِمِثْلِ ما بي تُشْفِقُ الْعُشاقُ

    And I am he whose heart love has toyed with;

    So lovers feel compassion for a plight like mine.

    And my lifeblood for a dark-lipped gazelle from Thihmid! When

    I am reminded of him, tears are shed for him.

    I do not forget—no, I do not forget—when I bade him farewell,

    His humble submission when the time for parting came,

    And his words: “May this not be our last meeting!”

    And there was an embrace—how sweet it was!
