وَصَلَarrived النّظامُthe verse بَقِيتَmay you live on ياO نَجْلَscion of الأُولَىthose who
وَصَلَ النّظامُ بَقِيتَ يا نَجْلَ الأُولَى
قَعَدواthey sat مِنَfrom العَلْياthe heights عَلَىupon هَامِthe crowns of الكَمالْperfection
قَعَدوا مِنَ العَلْيا عَلَى هَامِ الكَمالْ
The verse has arrived; may you live on, O scion of those
The system has arrived, yet you remain, O son of the first ones
Who sat aloft upon the crown of perfection.
They sat atop the heights upon the brow of perfection
وَذَكَرْتَand you mentioned أَنَّthat مقَالَةًa statement قِيلَتْwas uttered فَماso what
وَذَكَرْتَ أَنَّ مقَالَةً قِيلَتْ فَما
تِلْكَthat الْمَقالَةُthe statement ثُمَّthen مَنْwho ربُّauthor of الْمَقالْthe statement
تِلْكَ الْمَقالَةُ ثُمَّ مَنْ ربُّ الْمَقالْ
And you mentioned that a statement was made—so what
And you mentioned that a saying was uttered, so what
Was that statement, and who, then, was its author?
That saying, then who is the master of saying
لاdo not تَعْجَبَنَّmarvel (emphatic) فَكَمْfor how many رَأَيْناwe have seen مِنْof فتىًa young man
لا تَعْجَبَنَّ فَكَمْ رَأَيْنا مِنْ فتىً
قَصُرَتْgrew short خُطاهُhis steps بَعْدَafter أَنthat طَالَتْthey lengthened وطَالْand he grew tall
قَصُرَتْ خُطاهُ بَعْدَ أَن طَالَتْ وطَالْ
Do not marvel, for we have seen many a young man
Do not be astonished, for we have seen many a youth
Whose steps grew short after they had lengthened and he had grown tall.
Whose steps were shortened after being long and long
قَدْindeed كانَhe was مُقْتَعِداًseated upon ذُرَاthe summits of جَبَلِthe mountain of الهُدَىguidance
قَدْ كانَ مُقْتَعِداً ذُرَا جَبَلِ الهُدَى
فَهَوَىthen he plunged إلىto قَعْرِthe depths of السَّفاهَةِfolly والضَّلالْand error
فَهَوَى إلى قَعْرِ السَّفاهَةِ والضَّلالْ
He had sat upon the summits of the mountain of guidance,
He was sitting loftily upon the mountain of guidance
Then plunged to the depths of folly and error.
Yet he plunged to the depths of frivolity and misguidance
قَدْindeed كانَhe was فيin النُّورِthe light الأَتَمِّthe fullest فعادَthen he returned مُرْfallen back (first fragment)
قَدْ كانَ في النُّورِ الأَتَمِّ فعادَ مُرْ
تَكِساًfallen back (remaining fragment) إلَىinto الظُّلُماتِdarkness ياoh بِئْسَhow wretched البِدالْthe exchange
تَكِساً إلَى الظُّلُماتِ يا بِئْسَ البِدالْ
He had been in the fullest light, then fell back
He was amidst the perfect light, but returned
Into darkness—oh, what a wretched exchange!
Retreating into the darkness - how wretched the exchange
قَدْindeed كانَhe was نَجْماًa star أَشْرَقَتْshone brightly أنْوارُهُhis lights
قَدْ كانَ نَجْماً أَشْرَقَتْ أنْوارُهُ
فانْحَطَّthen he sank طَوْعاًwillingly بَيْنَamong حَصْباءِthe pebbles of الرِّمالْthe sands
فانْحَطَّ طَوْعاً بَيْنَ حَصْباءِ الرِّمالْ
He had been a star whose lights shone brightly,
He was a star whose lights had shone
Then sank willingly among the pebbles of the sands.
Yet he freely fell amongst the pebbles of the sands
قَدْindeed كانَit was هِجّيرَاهُhis constant refrain قَالَsaid اللهُGod قَاsaid (first fragment)
قَدْ كانَ هِجّيرَاهُ قَالَ اللهُ قَا
لَsaid (remaining fragment) رسُولُهHis Messenger ومَقَالُهُand his speech نِعْمَexcellent is الْمَقَالْthe speech
لَ رسُولُه ومَقَالُهُ نِعْمَ الْمَقَالْ
His constant refrain had been, “God said;
His pride was that God had spoken
His Messenger said”—and excellent indeed were his words.
And His Messenger - his saying being excellent saying
قَدْindeed كَانَhe was يُرْجَىexpected للمَراتِبfor the ranks والعُلَىand eminence
قَدْ كَانَ يُرْجَى للمَراتِب والعُلَى
أَتُرَىdo you think أَصَابَتْهُstruck him بذَاwith this عَيْنُthe evil eye of الكَمالْperfection
أَتُرَى أَصَابَتْهُ بذَا عَيْنُ الكَمالْ
He had been expected to attain high ranks and eminence.
He was hoped for ranks and heights
Do you think perfection's evil eye struck him with this?
Could it be that the eye of perfection has struck him?
قَالُواthey said يَسُبُّhe reviles صَحابَةَthe Companions of الْمُخْتارِthe Chosen One مُجْstriving diligently (first fragment)
قَالُوا يَسُبُّ صَحابَةَ الْمُخْتارِ مُجْ
تَهِداًstriving diligently (remaining fragment) وبالخُلَفاءِand with the caliphs يَفْتَتحُhe opens الْمَقَالْthe discourse
تَهِداً وبالخُلَفاءِ يَفْتَتحُ الْمَقَالْ
They said, “He reviles the Chosen One's Companions, striving
They said he insults the companions of the Chosen One
Diligently, and opens his discourse with the caliphs.”
Vehemently, and with the caliphs he initiates saying
وَهُناand here اقْشَعَرَّshuddered الجْلْدُthe skin وانْسَكَبَتْand flowed لَهfor him الthe
وَهُنا اقْشَعَرَّ الجْلْدُ وانْسَكَبَتْ لَه ال
عَبَراتُtears فيon الخَدَّيْنِthe two cheeks وانْقَطَعَand ceased الجِدالْthe debate
عَبَراتُ في الخَدَّيْنِ وانْقَطَعَ الجِدالْ
And here the skin shuddered, and for him flowed
And here the skin shuddered and tears
Tears down both cheeks, and the debate came to an end.
Poured upon his cheeks, and argument ceased
