مَرْحُ الجِيادِ مَعَ رَقْصِ الهِجانِ كذا
حَرُّthe heat الجِلادِof combat أَراهُI see it جُلَّthe greater part of مَقْصُوديwhat I seek
حَرُّ الجِلادِ أَراهُ جُلَّ مَقْصُودي
The frolicking of steeds, with the dancing of noble camels, and likewise
The neighing of steeds with the dancing of lithe maidens
The heat of combat—I see these as the chief things I seek.
The heat of branding irons seems my heart's desire
أَضْحَىhas become غَراميmy passion وتَهْياميand my infatuation ومُطَّرَبيand my delight
أَضْحَى غَرامي وتَهْيامي ومُطَّرَبي
فيin الضمَّرthe lean steeds القُودِthe long-necked ones لاnot فيin الخُرَّدِthe shy maidens الرُّودِthe supple ones
في الضمَّر القُودِ لا في الخُرَّدِ الرُّودِ
My passion, my infatuation, and my delight now lie
My passion and infatuation and yearning self
In lean, long-necked steeds, not in shy, supple maidens.
Lie in the embracing bosom, not in the secluded cell
