    You have split the drum and the reed pipe; no one

    like you today dances to a drum.

    And likewise, you have bridled the soul

    with the bridle of asceticism, which is the way to deliverance.

    تَبَّ مَنْ ظلَّ لِعَيْبٍ يَفْحَصُ

    You do not search for a person's fault;

    perish whoever keeps searching for a fault!

    فَهُوَ إن مَا رُضْتَها يَنْتَقِصُ

    So tame the soul when passion grows;

    for passion wanes if you tame the soul.

    Ah, may God curse those people who, whenever

    a lightning flash stirs their greedy hopes, wag their tails.

    And when a young man attains an honor,

    they choke with grief because of it.
