قَالُواthey said فُلانٌso-and-so عظِّمُواhonor حَقَّهُhis due
فإنَّهُfor he مِنْof عُتْرَةِthe family المصْطَفَىthe Chosen One
They said, “So-and-so—honor his due,
for he is of the Chosen One’s family.”
فَقُلْتَso you said للقُرْبىfor kinship منَof الْحَقِّwhat is due ماthat which
لاnot يَعْتَريهaffects it عنْدَin the eyes of مِثْليone like me خَفَاobscurity
Then you said, “Kinship has a right
that is not obscure to one like me.
لَكِنْbut فُلانٌso-and-so تَرِبَتْmay it be dust-covered كَفُّهُhis palm
لِلسُّنّةِtoward the Sunnah الْغَرّاءِradiant أَبْدَىhe showed الْجَفاdisdain
But so-and-so—may his palm be dust-covered—
has shown disdain for the radiant Sunnah,
وَصَارَand there came to be فيin الرَّفْضِRafḍ (rejection) لَهُfor him مَذْهَبٌa doctrine
كانَwas بِهِthrough it فيin دِينهِhis faith مِنْfrom شفاa brink
and has adopted a doctrine of Rafḍ,
through which he stood at a brink in his faith.
فَبُعْضُهُso part of him حَقٌّa duty عَلَىupon كُلِّevery مَنْone who
يَكُونُis فيon نَهْجِthe path الْهُدَىguidance مُنْصِفاfair-minded
Thus a part of him [perhaps: hatred of him] is a duty upon everyone
who is fair-minded on the path of guidance.
لاnot تنفعُbenefits الْقُرْبةُkinship اِبناًa son أبىrefused

Kinship does not benefit a son who rejected
his father’s faith, in the eyes of the loyal.

And how many of the nearest kin have been brought nearer
to baseness by some shortcoming.
فَعَمُّهُso his uncle قَدْindeed عَمَّهُengulfed him الْخِزْيُdisgrace إذْwhen

For disgrace engulfed his uncle when
he opposed the one whose faith had become pure.”
