إذاif كَلْبٌa dog عَوَىhowled ليّat me مِنْamong عِدائmy enemies
إذا كَلْبٌ عَوَى ليّ مِنْ عِدائ
أَجَبْتُI answered عَلَيْهِin reply to him بالسُّمْرِwith the brown-shafted spears العَواليthe long ones
أَجَبْتُ عَلَيْهِ بالسُّمْرِ العَوالي
If a dog among my enemies howls at me,
When a dog howls at me from among enemies
I answer him with long, brown-shafted spears.
I answer him with lofty generosity
