    تَتَردَّى مُفَوَّفَ الأَبْرادِ

    May you remain master of sending forth and bringing in,

    Clad in finely striped cloaks;

    And vex the envious in every respect,

    And grace the men in every assembly.

    To me you are peerless in virtues and excellence,

    And peerless in perfection and critical judgment:

    A writer, a poet, wise and discerning,

    A knight, a leader, with a lofty tent-pole.

    And when time becomes unruly,

    Then, after its defiance, it yields the reins.

    ما تَقِرُّ السُّيوفُ في الأَغْمادِ

    Full moons do not remain beneath a veil;

    Swords do not stay in their sheaths.

    And when calamities turn pitch-dark, there shine

    Radiant days thereafter, bringing good fortune.

    Every distress, as we have learned, is followed

    By relief that ensures attainment of the desired goal.

    Your verse of pearls has reached me, O Badr,

    And revived the dwelling of brotherhood and affection.
