كَأَنَّماas though الأَغْصانُthe boughs إذْwhen أَحْدَقَتْthey encircled
بالنَّهْرِaround the river مِنْfrom بَعْدِafter بُكَاءِthe weeping of الغَمامِthe clouds
It is as though the boughs, when they encircled
As if the branches, when the clouds wept,
the river after the weeping of the clouds,
Leaned over the river and bellowed
غِيدٌgraceful maidens عَلَىover مِرْآةِa mirror of حُسْنٍbeauty تَناfirst part of 'they vied'

were graceful maidens who, over a mirror of beauty,
A song upon the mirror of beauty to procure
vied and then shed tears of strife.
Tears of discord that it shed.
