I have
بِهِنَّfor them غَراماًa passion فَوْقَabove كُلِّevery غَرامِpassion
Peace be upon those books; indeed, I have
A passion for them beyond every other passion.
سَلامٌpeace عَلَيْهاupon them ماas long as حَيِيتُI live وإنْand if أَمُتْI die
فَهذاthen this وَدَاعٌfarewell والدُّمُوعُand the tears دَوامِيbloody
Peace be upon them as long as I live; and if I die,
Then this is farewell, and the tears are bloody.
عَلَىdespite أَنَّهاthe fact that they أَلْقَتْhave handed over مَقالِيدَthe keys وَصْلِهاtheir union
إلَيَّto me وهَامَتْand they became enamored بِيof me كَمِثْلِjust like هِياميmy ardent love
Though they have handed over the keys to their union
To me, and become enamored of me just as I am of them,
ولكِنَّنيand yet I لَوْif عِشْتُI lived ماhowever long عِشْتُI lived لمnot أقُلْI would say
شَفَيْتُI have assuaged غَراميmy passion أَوْor قَضَيْتُI have attained مَراميmy desire
Yet, however long I might live, I would not say:
“I have assuaged my passion or attained my desire.”
