If the strands of a gathering string together a company

Who, among people, are like peerless pearls,

    Pouring forth conversation without sin,

In an upright manner grounded in piety,

    And bringing like alongside like,

    Without clamor or obstinate contention,

Then that, to me, is preferable to a book

That recounts what has passed, excluding the new.

Otherwise, a book is greater in worth

    Than faltering and timeworn babble.

As for a gathering of bores, leave it,

And stay in a distant, barren wilderness.

Likewise, a gathering where there is backbiting

Has a stench resembling the stench of pus.

And a person's sleep is better than sitting

Amid insults against Amr or Zayd.
