أَعْنْfrom ...? ذِكْرِهاremembering her يَسْلُوforgets الْفُؤادُthe heart الْمُبَلْبَلُdistraught
وأَدْنَىand the slightest الْهَوَىlove إنْif صَحَّis true دَعْواكَyour claim يَقْتُلُkills
Can the distraught heart cease remembering her?
The mention of her brings solace to my troubled heart,
And the slightest love, if your claim is true, kills.
And the closest love, if your call be true, kills.
لَعَمْرُكِby your life ياO فَتَّانَةَenchantress الْحُسْنِbeauty إنّنيindeed I
لِبْعْدِكِbecause of your absence مُضْنىًworn down والمَدَامِعُand the tear ducts تَهْمُلُoverflow
By your life, O bewitching beauty, I am indeed
By your life, O beauty of beauty! I am, because of your distance,
worn down by your absence, and tears pour from my eyes.
Misery-laden, while tears flow.
ومَنْand whoever كانَwas يَهْوىloves مِثْلَone like هِنْدٍHind فإنّهُthen indeed he
يَرَىsees وَصْلَهاunion with her كُلَّall الذيthat which هُوَhe يَأْمُلُhopes for
And whoever loves one like Hind, surely
He who loves one like Hind, will indeed see
sees union with her as all that he hopes for.
The fulfillment of all he hopes.
إِذَاwhen فاقَexcels مَحْبوبُthe beloved of الْفَتَىthe young man فيin جَمالِهِhis beauty
فكَيْفَthen how يَليقُis fitting الصَّبْرpatience أَمْor كَيْفَhow يَجْمُلُis becoming
When a young man's beloved excels in beauty,
When the beloved surpasses the lover in beauty,
then how can patience be fitting, or how can it be becoming?
How can there be patience? Where is grace?
وإنَّand indeed فَتًىa man قَدْalready طالَhas grown long شَوْطُthe course of غَرامِهِhis passion
وقَدْand already ناهَزَhas neared الْخَمْسينَfifty يُلْحَىis censured ويَعْذَلُand is reproached
And indeed a man whose passion has run a long course
A man whose passion has lasted long,
and who has neared fifty is censured and reproached.
And who is past fifty, blamed and censured,
فإنْbut if نَظَرَlooked upon الْعُذّالُthe reproachers وَجْهَthe face of حَبِيبِهِhis beloved
فَبِالعُذْرِthen with an excuse مِنْهُمُfrom them ذَلكَthat الْعَذْلُthe reproach يُبْذَلُis offered
But if the reproachers look upon his beloved's face,
If the censurers but look on his beloved's face,
then that reproach of theirs is offered with an excuse.
Their censure itself is excused.
أَباO father of أَحْمَدٍAhmad هَلْwill ...? يَجْمَعُbring together اللهُGod بَيْنَناbetween us
بسَفْحِat the foot of اللِّوىَal-Liwa واللهُand God ماwhatever شَاءَHe wills يَفْعَلُHe does
O Abu Ahmad, will God bring us together
Abu Ahmad! Will God join us
at the foot of al-Liwa? And God does whatever He wills.
On the meadows of al-Liwa? God does what He wills.
فَقَدْfor indeed حَدَّثْتْنيhas told me النَّفْسُthe soul أنْthat اجْتِماعَناour meeting
قَريبٌnear وفيand in اللهِGod الرَّجاhope والْمُعَوَّلُand reliance
For my soul has told me that our meeting
My soul has told me our meeting is near,
is near, and in God lie hope and reliance.
And in God is hope and reliance.

Recall—may God guide you—a poem presented
Remember the poem I sent you before
to you from me by reed-pen and tongue.
Containing counsel and words.
وسَلْand ask مَنْthe One who بَنىَbuilt السَّبْعَthe seven heavens الطِّباقَtier upon tier ومَنْand who دَحاspread out
الأَراضِيthe lands بِجَمْعfor reuniting الشَّمْلِthe company فالجَمْعُfor reunion أَجْمَلُmore beautiful
And ask Him who built the seven heavens, tier upon tier, and who spread
Greet the builder of the seven-tiered house, and the one who
the lands, to reunite us, for reunion is lovelier.
Spread the lands by uniting. Unity is best.
ولاand do not تَكُbe ذاone possessed of يَأْسٍdespair عَنِof الْوَصْلِreunion بَعْدَماafter
تَطاوَلَhas grown long بَيْنقseparation (apparent typo) فالرَّجاfor hope مِنْكَfrom you أَمْثَلُmore fitting
And do not despair of reunion after
Despair not of union after the distance prolonged between us.
separation has grown long, for hope is more fitting for you.
Hope from you is more befitting.
ودُمْand remain سَالِماًsafe ياO فَرْدَpeerless one of آلِthe family of مُحَمّدٍMuhammad

And remain safe, O peerless one of Muhammad's family,
Live in peace, O peerless one of Muhammad's line,
and do not forget me, for your prayer is accepted.
And forget me not, for a prayer from you is answered.
