أَهْوَىI love الذيwhat يَهْوىhe loves فإنْand if عَنَّarises ماsomething that
يُؤذِيcauses harm رآنيhe sees me للأَذَىagainst the harm دَارِهاrepelling
I love what he loves; and if something arises
that causes harm, he finds me warding off the harm.
ولَسْتُand I am not بالرَّاغِبِat all inclined عَنْaway from حُبِّlove of مَنْone whom
قَدْalready صِرْتُI have become فيin حُبِّيmy love لَهُfor him شارِهاinsatiably eager
Nor do I turn away from loving one
for whom I have grown insatiable in my love.
أَرْحَلُI journey إنْif يَرْحَلُhe journeys حَتَّىuntil غَدَاbecame
نِضْوِيَmy lean mount مِنْfrom ضَرْبيmy beating لَهُof it قارِهاswift
I journey if he journeys, until
my lean mount has grown swift from my beating it.
أَبْكِيI weep عَلَىover فُرْقَتِهِseparation from him إنْif نَأيhe goes far away
لِذَاtherefore تَرَىyou see طَرْفِيmy eye غَدَاbecame مارِهاbleary
I weep over parting from him if he goes far away;
thus you see my eye has grown bleary.
إنif لامَنيhe blames me اللائِمُthe reproacher فيfor حُبِّهِlove for him
عَدَدْتُهُI deemed him فيin لَوْمِهِhis reproach وارهاfoolish
If the reproacher blames me for loving him,
I deem him foolish in his reproach.
هَلْhave جِئْتُI brought بالبُرْهانِwith the proof عِزّʿIzz (glory) الهُدَىal-Hudā (guidance)
أَمْor لَسْتُam I not فيماin what قُلْتُهُI said بَارِهاconvincing in argument
Have I brought the proof, O ʿIzz al-Hudā,
or am I not convincing in what I have said?
