Give ear to a discourse—an aid with bonds and their untying.

And leave aside whoever has become a Shafi‘i or a Zaydi.

And hasten to sever the bonds and undo them,

And dismantle a shackle that tightens bondage.

The wilderness of blind imitation is shame enough for a man

Who has become fettered by the thongs of following.

And be obedient to no one but Muhammad

Among mankind, if you seek to hold fast to guidance.

What a difference, then, between one who says, “The evidence rules thus,”

And one who says, “I followed the imam in blind imitation.”

And set aside all counsel beside my own, for indeed

I am the caller whose voice is echoed; the other is the echo.
