عِلْمُknowledge الفَتَىthe young man إنْif لَمْnot يَكُنْhe is ذَاpossessed of وَرَعِpiety
كَمِثْلِlike مِصْباحٍa lamp بِكَفِّin the hand of مَنْone who عَمِيhas gone blind
The young man's knowledge, if he is not pious,
Is like a lamp in the hand of one who is blind.
وَوَرَعُand the piety of الْمَرْءِthe person بِدُونِwithout عِلْمِknowledge
كالسَّعْيlike walking فيon الأَرْضِthe earth بِجُنْحِunder the cover of الظُّلَمِthe darkness
And a person's piety without knowledge
Is like walking the earth under the cover of darkness.
