وَهْوَand he بالحُبِّof love خَلِيقُworthy
وَهْوَ بالحُبِّ خَلِيقُ
They hated him, not for any fault,
They hated him, not for a sin,
though he is worthy of love.

مَاthere is no لِمَنْfor whoever فَازَtriumphed بِسَبْقٍby taking the lead
مَا لِمَنْ فَازَ بِسَبْقٍ
فيamong بَنيthe sons of الدّهْرِtime صَدِيقُa friend
في بَني الدّهْرِ صَدِيقُ
Whoever wins precedence has no
What fault in one outpacing
friend among the sons of time.
All the friends of his day?
حَسَدُوهُthey envied him أَيّهاO you الْحُسّthe enviers (first part)
حَسَدُوهُ أَيّها الْحُسّ
ادُ(completion of 'enviers') باللهِby God أَفِيقُواcome to your senses
ادُ باللهِ أَفِيقُوا
They envied him. O you enviers,
O you envious ones, awake!
by God, come to your senses!
