I say, after praising the One who

    has garlanded us with blessings,

    while invoking blessings and peace

    upon the Prophet of Medina,

and his family and his companions,

who untie the knots of affliction:

There has not come to us, concerning symbols,

    through the passage of time,

a method for us to follow

    along clearly defined paths;

    ما بَيْنَ أهْلِ الفِطَنِ

for it is an agreed convention

that exists among people of discernment.

There is no obligation for us in it,

nor any requirement to follow a path.

So any mark made by an inscriber,

    recognized by whoever pays attention,

    fulfills the intended purpose of

making clear what has not become clear.

That, then, is the notation which

    this matter was built upon.
