عَلامَ وفِيمَ غَدا يَضْجَرُ

عَلامَ وفِيمَ غَدا يَضْجَرُ

وقَدْ صَارَ في نِعْمَةٍ يُذْكَرُ

وقَدْ صَارَ في نِعْمَةٍ يُذْكَرُ

For what, and why, has he grown discontented?

Why does he feel depressed tomorrow,

Though he now lives in blessing and is well known.

When he has attained a status worth mentioning?

وكُلُّ حُظوظِ بَني جِنْسِهِ

وكُلُّ حُظوظِ بَني جِنْسِهِ

تَراها لَدَى حَظِّهِ تَصْغُرُ

تَراها لَدَى حَظِّهِ تَصْغُرُ

And all the fortunes of his fellow men

And every fortune of his fellow men

You see grow small beside his own fortune.

Seems paltry compared to his own lot.

وفي الْعِلْمِ هِذِي تصانِيفُهُ

وفي الْعِلْمِ هِذِي تصانِيفُهُ

غَدَتْ بَيْنَ أهْلِ النُّهَى تُنْشَرُ

غَدَتْ بَيْنَ أهْلِ النُّهَى تُنْشَرُ

And in scholarship, these writings of his

In knowledge, his compositions

Are now circulated among people of understanding.

Have become well-known among the righteous.

وفي النّاسِ ما قَالَهُ نَافِذٌ

وفي النّاسِ ما قَالَهُ نَافِذٌ

فَيَنْهَى إذا شَاءَ أو يَأْمُرُ

فَيَنْهَى إذا شَاءَ أو يَأْمُرُ

And among the people, what he says holds sway;

Among the people, his word holds sway

So he forbids, when he wishes, or commands.

To forbid or command as he wills.

وقَدْ وَفّرَ اللهُ أَرْزاقَهُ

وقَدْ وَفّرَ اللهُ أَرْزاقَهُ

وعافَاهُ منْ كُلِّ مايُنْكَرُ

وعافَاهُ منْ كُلِّ مايُنْكَرُ

And God has made his provisions abundant,

God has provided him ample sustenance

And kept him safe from all that is deplored.

And protected him from all that is disapproved.

فَحَمْداً وشُكْراً لِخَلاَّقِهِ

فَحَمْداً وشُكْراً لِخَلاَّقِهِ

وهَا هُوَ أَحْقَرُ مَنْ يَشْكرُ

وهَا هُوَ أَحْقَرُ مَنْ يَشْكرُ

So praise and thanks to his Creator,

So praise and thanks to his Creator!

And here he is, the lowliest of those who give thanks.

Yet he is the lowliest of those who give thanks.
