سَعَوْا لاَرُعُوا في جَلْبِ كُلِّ مَضَرَّةٍ

سَعَوْا لاَرُعُوا في جَلْبِ كُلِّ مَضَرَّةٍ

وَكادُوا وما كَادُوا يَنَالُونَ مَقْصِدا

وَكادُوا وما كَادُوا يَنَالُونَ مَقْصِدا

They strove—may they find no protection—to bring about every harm.

They strove to graze in gathering every harm,

And they plotted, yet could scarcely attain an aim.

And nearly did they attain their goal.

وَلَمْ يَدَعوا بَاباً مِنَ الْبَغْيِ مُرْتَجاً

وَلَمْ يَدَعوا بَاباً مِنَ الْبَغْيِ مُرْتَجاً

وَلاَ تركوا سَيْفاً مِنَ الظُّلْم مُغْمَدا

وَلاَ تركوا سَيْفاً مِنَ الظُّلْم مُغْمَدا

They left no door of transgression shut,

They left no door of oppression unopened,

nor left a sword of oppression sheathed.

Nor did they leave a sword of injustice sheathed.

وَقَالُوا ضَعُوا عِلْمَ الْفَتَى إِنَّ عِلْمَهُ

وَقَالُوا ضَعُوا عِلْمَ الْفَتَى إِنَّ عِلْمَهُ

غَدَا مُتْهِماً بَيْنَ الأنامِ ومُنْجِدا

غَدَا مُتْهِماً بَيْنَ الأنامِ ومُنْجِدا

And they said, “Belittle the young man's learning, for his learning

They said, "Diminish the knowledge of the youth,

now ranges among mankind, through Tihamah and Najd.”

For his knowledge tomorrow will indict him and assist."

فَقُلْتُ لَهُمْ مَنْ يَرْفَع اللهُ شَاوَهُ

فَقُلْتُ لَهُمْ مَنْ يَرْفَع اللهُ شَاوَهُ

سَيَحْميهِ مِنْ وَضْعٍ وإنْ رَغِمَ الْعِدَا

سَيَحْميهِ مِنْ وَضْعٍ وإنْ رَغِمَ الْعِدَا

So I said to them: “Whoever God raises in stature,

I said to them, "He whom God raises his worth,

He will shield him from abasement, though his foes be humbled.

Will be protected from diminishment even if the enemies hate.

وإنْ يُرِدِ الرَّحْمنُ نَشْرَ فَضِلَةٍ

وإنْ يُرِدِ الرَّحْمنُ نَشْرَ فَضِلَةٍ

أَقامَ لَها بَيْنَ الْبَرِيَّةِ حُسَّدا

أَقامَ لَها بَيْنَ الْبَرِيَّةِ حُسَّدا

And if the Most Merciful wills to spread a virtue,

And if the Merciful wants to spread a virtue,

He raises up enviers for it among humankind.”

He will establish for it among humanity an envier."
