They say, “This is the city's scholar, and the one who
They say this is the wise man of Egypt, the one

فَقُلْتُso I said لَهُمْto them هذَاthis كَبِيرُchief كِلابِهاits dogs
لَهُhe has نَبَحاتٌbarks عِنْدَat كُلِّall الْمَدارِكِthe avenues of understanding
So I said to them, “This is the chief of its dogs;
So I said to them, he is but the top dog of the pack
he barks at every avenue of understanding.”
With a bark ready at every doorway and portal
فَياso, oh لَيْتَwould that شِعْرِيmy knowledge ماwhat أناI عِنْدَin the sight of خالِقيmy Creator
وَهَلْand whether أناI نَاجٍsaved بَعْدَafter تلكَthose المعَارِكِthe battles
So, would that I knew what I am in my Creator's sight,
Oh, if only I knew, what am I to my Creator?
and whether I shall be saved after those battles.
Will I be saved after those battles and strifes?
