حَتّىuntil مَتَىwhen ذَاthis البَيْنُthe separation ياO مَنْyou who غَداcame to be
قَلْبيmy heart لَدَيْهِwith him وَهْوَwhile he لاnot يَشْعُرُis aware
How long must this separation last, O you with whom
my heart now dwells, though you are unaware?
يُوهمُنيhe leads me to believe أَنّيthat I حَبيبٌa beloved لَهُto him
إنْif صَحّis true ذَاthis ماwhat بَالُهُis the matter with him يَهْجُرُhe forsakes
He leads me to believe that I am his beloved;
if that is true, why does he forsake me?
ياO طَلْعَةًcountenance تَطْلُعُrises لِيfor me بالْمُنَىwith wishes
وإنْand if تَغِبْyou vanish فالأُنْسُthen delight لاnot يَحْضُرُcomes
O countenance that rises before me with all I long for,
and if you vanish, delight does not come.
باللهِby God قُلtell ليto me هكَذاthus شَرْعُthe way مَنْone who
قَدْindeed كَانَwas فِيمَنْamong those قَبْلَناbefore us يَذْكُرُremembers
By God, tell me: is this the way of one
who, among those before us, used to remember?
