- أتسأل مصر ما حمل العميدDoes Egypt ask what the chief has brought,
- أتلك مصارع المستضعفيناAre those the places where the oppressed fell?
- أتنام عينك والعيون سهادDoes your eye sleep while other eyes are sleepless?
- أتنقم ما يريبك من خلاليDo you resent what troubles you in my character,
- أتين بهن من شوق غليلThey came, a burning thirst of longing within them,
- أجيبي أم كلثوم أجيبيAnswer, Umm Kulthum, answer!
- أخا الدهر ما الدهر إذ ينسبO brother of Time, what is Time when its lineage is traced?
- أخالد إنك ذو نجدةO Khalid, you are a man of valor!
- أدأبك أن تريد المستحيلاIs it your habit to desire the impossible?
- أدر الحديث وطف على الأقوامSet the tale in motion, and pass among the peoples,
- أدنو ويجمح بي الإباء فأعزبI draw near, but pride runs away with me, so I withdraw.
- اذكرونا في الملمات الكبرRemember us in the great calamities,
- اذهب حيي مذمما مشؤوماGo, Huyayy, censured and ill-omened!
- أراك على المغيب فهل ترانيI see you though out of sight—do you see me?
- أراك على ما يرهق الناس من أذىI see you, despite the harm that burdens the people,
- أرأيت حكمة سيد الكرماءHave you seen the wisdom of the master of the generous,
- أرأيتها تبغي السبيل فتهتديHave you seen her seek the path and find her way,
- إرفع كتابك يا سراRaise your document, O Suraqah;
- أرى الأرض ترجف بالعالمينI see the earth quake beneath all humankind,
- أرى الدم يجري في الكنانة دائباI see blood flowing ceaselessly in Egypt, the Quiver,
- أرى العدل دعوى يعجب الناس حسنهاI see justice as a claim whose beauty pleases the people,
- أرى الناس في مصر شتى القلوبI see the people in Egypt with hearts so divided
- أرى بمصر ولاة لا خلاق لهمI see in Egypt rulers who have no virtue.
- أرى فسادا وشرا ضاع بينهماI see corruption and evil, between which has been lost
- اسألي يا نجد أهل الميفعهAsk, O Najd, the people of al-Mayfa‘ah:
- اسم سما لفظه وازدان معناهA name whose sound rose high and whose meaning grew fair.
- اشهدي يا مصر أعمال البنينWitness, O Egypt, the deeds of your sons,
- أصد بوجهي عن كثيرين إننيI turn my face away from many, for I
- أطلقوا قيدها وحلوا العقالاRelease her bonds and loosen her fetters.
- أعجزنا أن نجوب المشرقينHave we been unable to traverse the two Easts,
- أعد البناء وجدد الميثاقاRestore the edifice and renew the covenant.
- أعد الرجاء وجدد الأملاRestore hope and renew aspiration.
- أعدوا لأعلام البيان المنابراPrepare pulpits for the luminaries of eloquence,
- أعدي النمل خيبر والذباباMuster the ants, Khaybar, and the flies;
- أعلل نفسي بالعواقب أرتجيI console myself with what is to come, hoping
- أعلل نفسي والأماني طماعةI soothe my soul, while hopes are insatiable;
- أعلى المآتم تخفق الأعلامDo flags flutter over funerals,
- أعن خطب الخلافة تسأليناDo you ask about the calamity of the caliphate?
- أعندك أنا لم ندع بعدك الوجداDo you suppose that, after you, we have not forsaken longing,
- أعيدوا الحديث وقولوا أجلRepeat the message and say: Yes!
- أعيدوا الحق واتخذوه عهداRestore justice, and take it as a covenant.
- أعيدوا لنا عصر الجهاد مظفراRestore to us the triumphant age of struggle,
- أغرك يا أسماء ما ظن قاسمHas what Qasim thought beguiled you, Asma?
- أغيثوا مصر واستبقوا بنيهاCome to Egypt's aid and keep her sons alive,

- أقول للقوم إذ طاح اللجاج بهمI say to the people when oppression befalls them,
- أكان يزيد بأسك إذ تصابDoes your might increase when you are wounded?

- أكل متوج يحمي البلاداDoes every crowned ruler protect the land
- ألا إن هذا وفد كندة قد أتىBehold! The delegation of Kindah has come

- إلام تجن الحادثات وتظلمHow long will calamities rage and oppress?
- الحكم إنصاف وحسن سياسةRule is fairness and sound governance.

- أما والليالي وأحداثهاLo, by the nights and their events,
- أما ومضارب البيض الرقاقIndeed—by the strokes of slender, gleaming blades
- أما ينهى دعاة السوء عناWill the advocates of evil not be held back from us
- أمشي على خوف وطول تلفتI walk in fear, forever looking about,
- أمل يزف مع السنين عروساA hope comes in procession with the years, a bride,
- إملإ الأرض يا محمد نوراFill the earth, O Muhammad, with light,
- أمم العروبة جاء يومك فاعلميO nations of Arabia, your day has come, so realize,
- أمن صلف صدودك أم دلالDoes your turning away spring from arrogance or coquetry?
- أمن عرش الشآم إلى أثيناFrom Syria's throne to Athens?
- أمنارة الساري وأمن الواديO beacon of the night traveler, and safety of the valley,
- أمنك الذكر يعصف بالقلوبIs it from you that remembrance storms through hearts
- أمنك فزارة انبعث الغزاةWas it from you, Fazarah, that the raiders set forth?
- أمهجة مصر يضرب كل رامIs it Egypt's heart that every archer strikes?
- أميطي الغيب وادرعي الشهوداCast off absence, and don presence as armor;
- إن جل غنم المسلمين بخيبرIf the Muslims' spoils at Khaybar were great,
- إنا أتينا بالثناء نسوقهIndeed, we have come with praise, sending it forth,
- أنا بنو عثمان أعلام الورىWe, the sons of Osman, are humankind's lofty peaks;
- انبعث في الأرض يا وحي السماءArise on earth, O revelation of heaven!
- أنت المثال لكل حر صادقYou are the model for every free, truthful man
- أنخ البعير فقد بلغت المسجداSlow down, O camel, for you have reached the mosque
- أنذر الأقوام لو تغني النذرWarn the peoples—if warnings could avail;
- أنشروا الآثار واستقصوا السيرBring the monuments to light, and search the chronicles thoroughly;
- انظر إلى المال أمسى بيننا ورقاLook at money, it has become mere paper between us
- إني نصحتك فاتهمت نصيحتيIndeed, I advised you, but you mistrusted my counsel.
- إني نظرت إلى الحوادث نظرةIndeed, I cast a gaze upon events
- أهاب الحق فاستبقوا كراماTruth has called; race ahead nobly.
- أهذا هو العدل الذي فيه أطنبواIs this the justice they expounded at such length,

- إيه بني مصر من صم وعميانSpeak on, sons of Egypt, you deaf and blind!
- أيها الجند ظافرا يتمشىO army, strolling in triumph,
- أيها القائد العظيم تقدمO great leader, march forth,
- بجير كيف يخطئك السدادEnglish translation unavailable
- بربك أيها العام الجديدBy your Lord, O new year,
- بربك ماذا أصاب البلاداBy your Lord, what has befallen the land?
- برق بأنباء الأحبة سارA lightning message, speeding with tidings of loved ones,
- بسيفك فيما اخترت من عاجل القتلBy your own sword, in the swift death you chose,
- بشراك أم حبيبة بمحمدGlad tidings to you, Umm Habiba, of Muhammad!
- بطل الكنانة من لها ولأهلهاO hero of Kinana, who will stand for her and her people,
- بعد التحية والكرامة كلهاAfter greetings and all due honor,
- بكيت فأبكيت الطلول البوالياYou wept and made the crumbling ruins weep;
- بلغ الدنى فألم غير مسلمIt reached the worlds and alighted without a greeting—
- بلغت مطيك أول الركبانYour mounts have reached the foremost of the riders,
- بمثلكما تعلو الديار وتسعدThrough the likes of you two, the lands rise and prosper,
- بني الإسلام إقداماO sons of Islam, advance!
- بني الآمال قد وضح اليقينO children of hope, certainty has become clear.
- بني الكنانة هذا صوتها ارتفعاSons of Kinana, this is her voice, risen high.
- بني الملوح لا حام ولا واقO sons of al-Mulawwah, there is no protector and no defender.
- بني بكر وما يغني الملامSons of Bakr, what good is reproach?
- بنى ثعلبة هبواSons of Thalabah, rise!
- بني جذيمة ما في الأمر من عجبSons of Judhayma, there is nothing strange in this affair.
- بني حنيفة ما أشقى مسيلمةSons of Hanifa, how wretched Musaylima is!
- بني سليم أعدوا الخيل واحترسواO sons of Sulaym, ready the horses and be on guard,
- بني عامر ردوا عن الشر عامراO sons of Amir, turn Amir away from evil.
- بني لحيان لوذوا بالجبالSons of Lihyan, seek refuge in the mountains,
- بني مذحج ما ثم من مترددO sons of Madhhij, there is no room for wavering:
- بني مرة اقضوا أمركم قبل غالبSons of Murrah, settle your affair before Ghalib comes,
- بني مصر لوذوا بالسكينة واصبرواSons of Egypt, seek refuge in tranquility and be patient.
- بني مصر ما للطامعين وما لكمSons of Egypt, what of the covetous, and what of you,
- تأن ابن حرب لست في مثلها جلداTake your time, Ibn Harb; you lack the mettle for the like of this.
- تجدد من ذكراك للشرق مأتماThrough your remembrance, you renew a mourning rite for the East,
- تجيب بعثت الوفد أما سبيلهTujib sent the delegation; as for its path,
- ترامى الجيش واندفع الرعيلThe army surged forward, and the vanguard charged.
- ترفق يا عيينة باللقاحBe gentle, Uyaynah, with the milk-camels,
- ترك الملوك ملوك كندة وانتحىHe left the kings—the kings of Kindah—and made for
- تعلموا كيف تبني مجدها الأممLearn how nations build their glory,
- تغلغل في القلب حتى وقرIt penetrated the heart until it settled
- تقدم فهذا مطلع الحق والهدىAdvance, for this is the rise of truth and guidance
- تلك العروبة جرحها يجري دماThere is the Arab nation, its wound streaming blood.
- تلك القضية هل لها ميعادThat cause—does it have an appointed time?
- تلك عقبى البغي فانظر كيف عاداThat is tyranny's outcome; see how it turned out.
- توالت وفود الله تختار دينهGod’s delegations came one after another, choosing His religion,
- ثقيف اجمعي للات ما شئت من عزمThaqif, muster for al-Lat all the resolve you wish,
- ثقيف انظري أين قصد الطريقThaqif, see where the road's straight course lies,
- جاء الرسول كتابه بيمينهThe envoy came, his letter in his right hand,
- جددوا الذكرى لأهل المشرقRenew the remembrance for the people of the East,
- جرد السيف أبا بكر فماUnsheathe the sword, Abu Bakr, for never
- جرى سعدا ومر بنا يميناGood omen passed by blessing us
- جزى الله ما أديتما من حقوقهMay God reward you both for the duties you fulfilled toward Him,
- جمعن المشارق في المؤتمرThey gathered the eastern lands at the congress;
- جويرية احمدي عقبى البناءJuwayriyah, give thanks for the outcome of your marriage:
- حل الوفاء الحق عقد ذمامهTrue fidelity has untied the knot of its pledge,
- حماة الوغى أين السلام الموطدGuardians of battle, where is firmly established peace?
- حملت سناك مواكب الأعوامThe processions of years have carried your radiance.
- حميت لواء الملك فارتد طالبهYou defended the banner of kingship, and its seeker recoiled.
- حي الخليل وطف بتلك الدارGreet Khalil and circle that house;
- حي العروبة آسادا وأشبالاHail Arabhood—lions and cubs alike—
- حي الكنانة وانظر كيف تدكرSalute al-Kinana, and see how she remembers;
- حيوا الهلال وحيوا أمة النيلSalute the crescent, and salute the nation of the Nile.
- حيوا بمصر حماتها الأحراراSalute Egypt's free defenders,
- خذوني إلى دار النيابة واسألواTake me to the House of Deputies, and ask
- خزاعة أبشري بالعهد سمحاKhuzaʿah, rejoice in the generous covenant,
- خطب الرسول فكل سمع منصتThe Messenger preached, so every ear listened in silence,
- خف الله يا جد بن قيس ولا تطعFear God, O Jadd ibn Qays, and do not obey
- خفوا يلاقون النبي بيثربThey hid themselves, met the Prophet in Yathrib
- خلت المنازل منك والأوطانThe homes and homelands are empty of you,
- خلق العروبة أن تجد وتدأباThe trait of Arabness is to be steadfast and diligent
- خلوا سبيل الشاعر المتدفعClear the path for the impetuous poet,
- خوضوا الوغى يا أهل وادي القرىPlunge into battle, O people of Wadi al-Qura!
- داء أهل الشرق ضعف الهممThe ailment of the people of the East is weakness of resolve.
- دار العروبة ترفع الأعلاماThe house of Arabdom raises the banners,
- دعا فأثار الساكنين دعاؤهHe called, and his call stirred those at rest;
- دعا فأجابوا والقلوب صوادفHe called, and they answered, though their hearts turned away.
- دعاة الخير والإصلاح مرحىAdvocates of goodness and reform—welcome!
- دعوا استقلال مصر فقد عرفناLeave aside Egypt’s independence, for we have learned
- دعوا الشهيد لشعب ليس ينساهLeave the martyr to a people who do not forget him.

- سر يا أسامة ما لجيشك هازمMarch, O Usama; no one can defeat your army.

- شباب محمد سيروا سراعاYouth of Muhammad, march—and swiftly!
- شجن بقلبك يطمئن ويفزعA sorrow in your heart grows calm and takes fright,
- صاح الحمى ببني الهيجاء فاعتزمواThe homeland called to the sons of battle, and they resolved;
- صاحب السيفين ماذا صنعاWhat did the bearer of the two swords do?
- صبوا المداد وحطموا الأقلاماPour out the ink and shatter the pens,
- صبوح دم يساجله غبوقA morning draught of blood is matched by an evening draught;
- صريع هوى أفقت وما أفاقاYou recovered, but love's stricken victim did not.
- صفوا المواكب وامشوا حولها مرحاLine up the processions and walk joyfully around them.
- صلوا إخوانكم واقضوا الذماماKeep ties with your brothers and honor your pledges,
- صوت من الأفق العلي يناديA voice calls from the lofty horizon.
- صونوا الذمام فإن الحر من صاناGuard your pledges, for noble is he who guards them;
- صونوا الذمام فإن الحر من صاناSafeguard solemn covenants, for the noble man is he who safeguards them.
- طاف بالقوم يحيي المؤمنينHe went round among the people, greeting the believers,
- طال التحجب فارفع الأستاراThe seclusion has been long, so lift the curtains
- طالت أناتك في القوم الألى جهلواLong has your patience endured with the people who acted ignorantly.
- طرب الحطيم وكبر الحرمانAl-Hatim rejoiced, and the two Sanctuaries proclaimed God's greatness.
- طغت الدماء وفاضت الأرواحBlood overflowed, and souls poured forth,
- طف بالمصارع واستمع نجواهاGo round the places where they fell and hear their whispers;
- طلحة الخير طلحة الجود أبشرTalhah of goodness, Talhah of bounty, rejoice!
- ظماء تريد الري من ذا يذودهاThirsty ones seek to drink their fill—who is it that drives them away?
- عام أهاب به الزمان فأقبلاA year that Time summoned, and it came forward,
- عرش القياصر والقضاء إذا جرىO throne of the tsars, when destiny runs its course,
- عرف الزمان مصارع الأبطالTime has known the deaths of heroes,
- عقرب السوء تمادى في الأذىThe scorpion of evil has gone too far in doing harm,
- عكاشة ما في الغمر من متخلفO ʿUkāshah, no one remains behind in al-Ghamr;
- علم الجهاد لك التحية من فتىO banner of struggle, a young man salutes you,
- على الجمر سر فهو السبيل الذي مضىWalk on the embers, for this is the path once trodden
- على ذكرها فليعرف الحق جاهلهAt its mention, let whoever is ignorant of the truth acknowledge it,
- على ذكرها فليعرف الحق جاهلهAt its mention, let one ignorant of the truth learn it,
- علينا لك الحق الذي أنت تعلمWe owe you the due that you yourself know;
- عندي إذا صرع الجنوب سباتWhen slumber lays people on their sides, I have
- عهد لمصر من الحياة جديدA new covenant of life for Egypt.
- عيد الفداء جرى باليمن طائرهThe Feast of Sacrifice—its bird has sped with good fortune,
- عيينة أمسكت العجوز تريدها‘Uyaynah, you held the old woman, wanting her
- عيينة ماذا أنت ويحك صانعʿUyaynah, what are you doing—woe to you?
- غشيت ديارها من بعد عشرI visited her dwellings after ten years,
- غضب الحماة لدين أحمد غضبةThe defenders raged for Ahmad's religion with a mighty rage,
- غوى الناس حتى لا صواب ولا رشدPeople have gone astray until there is neither right judgment nor guidance.
- فداؤك نفسي من لواء محببMy soul be your ransom, beloved banner!
- فزع الدجى لأنينه المترددThe darkness was startled by his echoing groans,
- فلسطين صبرا إن للفوز موعداPalestine, be patient: victory has an appointed time.
- في حمى الحق ومن حول الحرمWithin the protection of right, and around the sacred sanctuary,
- في كل يوم شرعة ونظامEvery day, a new law and a new order;
- قدوم من أبي موسى الهمامThe arrival of valiant Abu Musa,
- قصوا الحديث عن الفريق النائيRecount the tale of the band gone far away,
- قفوا ساعة إن المحب له عهدPause a while, for the lover has a bond with you.
- قل للألى رقدوا والعدل يقظانTell those who slept while justice kept watch:
- قل للأمين أقم للحر مأتمهTell al-Amin: hold the free man's funeral.
- قل للحسين ولات حين ملامSay to al-Husayn—though this is no time for reproach—
- قل للوزير إذا خلا لك وجههSay to the minister, when his face is turned to you alone,
- قل ما أردت فما عليك جناحSay whatever you wish; no blame rests on you.
- قم ودع الأوثان والأصناماRise, and bid farewell to idols and graven images.
- قومي أهاب من الحياة بشيرMy people, a herald from life has called;
- كذب الملوك ومن يحاول عندهمThe kings lie, as does whoever seeks among them
- كذب الوشاة وأخطأ اللوامThe slanderers lied, and the faultfinders were wrong.
- كذبوا على الدستور ما فيهم لهThey lied about the constitution; among them it has no
- كذلك يشقى الجامح المتعسفThus the headstrong, unjust man comes to grief,
