خَطَبpreached الرسولُthe Messenger فَكُلُّso every سَمْعٍear مُنْصِتٌlistening silently
خَطَب الرسولُ فَكُلُّ سَمْعٍ مُنْصِتٌ
فيin الخَافِقَيْنِthe East and West وكلُّand every قلبٍheart خَاشِعُhumble and reverent
في الخَافِقَيْنِ وكلُّ قلبٍ خَاشِعُ
The Messenger preached, so every ear listened in silence,
The Prophet preached, and every ear was attentive,
In East and West, and every heart was humbled.
In the two worlds, and every heart humble.
قُلْspeak ياO محمّدُMuhammad كُلُّevery شيءٍthing مُطرقٌbowing its head
قُلْ يا محمّدُ كُلُّ شيءٍ مُطرقٌ
يَرجوhopes for المزيدَmore وكلُّand every شيءٍthing سَامِعُlistening
يَرجو المزيدَ وكلُّ شيءٍ سَامِعُ
Speak, O Muhammad; all things bow their heads,
Say, O Muhammad, everything is silent,
Hoping for more, and all things listen.
Awaiting more, and everything listening.
قلsay ماwhat يُعَلِّمكَteaches you الذيthe One who هوHe عَالِمٌknowing
قل ما يُعَلِّمكَ الذي هو عَالِمٌ
أنّthat النُّفوسَthe souls إلىtoward الفسادِcorruption نَوازِعُinclined
أنّ النُّفوسَ إلى الفسادِ نَوازِعُ
Say what the One who knows teaches you:
Say, what teaches you He who is All-Knowing,
That souls incline toward corruption.
That souls tend towards corruption?
أدِّبْdiscipline بدينِthrough the religion of اللَّهِGod قَوْمَكَyour people إنّهindeed it
أدِّبْ بدينِ اللَّهِ قَوْمَكَ إنّه
دِينٌa religion لأشتاتِfor the scattered varieties of الفضائلِthe virtues جامعُgathering together
دِينٌ لأشتاتِ الفضائلِ جامعُ
Discipline your people through God's religion, for it is
Discipline your people with the religion of God, for it
A religion that gathers the scattered virtues together.
Is a religion that gathers all virtues.
هذاthis تراثُthe heritage of العالمِينَthe world's peoples بأسرهمall of them
هذا تراثُ العالمِينَ بأسرهم
يَجرِيflows عليهمto them نَفْعُهits benefit المتتابعُcontinual
يَجرِي عليهم نَفْعُه المتتابعُ
This is the heritage of all the world's peoples;
This is the heritage of the whole world,
Its continual benefit flows to them.
Its benefits flowing perpetually upon them.
فلكلِّso for every عصرٍage منهfrom it وِردٌa draught سائغٌpleasant to drink
فلكلِّ عصرٍ منه وِردٌ سائغٌ
ولكلِّand for every جِيلٍgeneration منهfrom it كَنْزُa treasure رائعُwondrous
ولكلِّ جِيلٍ منه كَنْزُ رائعُ
So every age has a pleasant draught from it,
For every age it has a pleasing draught,
And every generation has a wondrous treasure from it.
And for every generation a splendid treasure.
قُلsay للذيto the one who تَركleft السّبيلَthe path ألاtake heed اسْتَقِمْbe upright
قُل للذي تَرك السّبيلَ ألا اسْتَقِمْ
وعَنِand from العَمايةِblindness فَلْيَزَعْكَso let it restrain you الوازِعُthe restraining force
وعَنِ العَمايةِ فَلْيَزَعْكَ الوازِعُ
Tell the one who has left the path: take heed, be upright!
Say to him who left the path: Correct yourself,
And let the restraining force keep you from blindness.
And let duty dissuade you from blindness.
فإذاso if غَوَيْتَyou go astray فكلُّthen every شيءٍthing ضائرٌharmful
فإذا غَوَيْتَ فكلُّ شيءٍ ضائرٌ
وإذاand if اهتديتَyou find guidance فكلُّthen every شيءٍthing نافعُbeneficial
وإذا اهتديتَ فكلُّ شيءٍ نافعُ
So if you go astray, everything is harmful,
For if you go astray, everything is harmful,
And if you find guidance, everything is beneficial.
And if you are guided, everything is beneficial.
اللَّهُGod أنزلَsent down فيin المفصَّلِthe Mufassal (Qur’anic section) حُكمَهُHis decree
اللَّهُ أنزلَ في المفصَّلِ حُكمَهُ
والحقُّand the truth يعرفهknows it التَقيُّthe devout one الطائعُthe obedient one
والحقُّ يعرفه التَقيُّ الطائعُ
God sent down His decree in the Mufassal,
God sent down His rule in detail,
And the devout, obedient one knows the truth.
And the pious recognises the truth and obeys.
