مِصرُEgypt أَنتِyou الحَياةُlife وَالمَوتُand death طُرّاًaltogether
لِشَهيدٍfor a martyr رَمَيتِهُyou struck him بِسِهامِكْwith your arrows
Egypt, you are life and death alike
Egypt, you are life and death together
for a martyr you struck with your arrows.
For a martyr you struck down with your arrows
ذَهَبَتdeparted نَفسُهُhis soul لِنَفسِكِto your soul زُلفىan offering
وَتَقضَّىand came to an end مَرامُهُhis aim فيin مَرامِكْyour aim
His soul went as an offering to yours,
His soul went willingly to be with you
and his aim found its end in yours.
And fulfilled its purpose through your own
أَيُّwhich حَقٍّright مِنfrom قَبلِbefore حَقِّكِyour right يُقضىis fulfilled
وَذِمامٍand a pledge يُصانُis safeguarded قَبلَbefore ذِمامِكْyour pledge
Which right is fulfilled before your right,
What right takes precedence over your rights?
and which pledge is guarded before your pledge?
What reins are held before your reins?
باركَmay bless اللَهُGod فيin بَنيكِyour sons وَطوبىand blessedness
لِسَعيدٍfor a fortunate one يَكونُis مِنamong خُدّامِكْyour servants
May God bless your sons, and blessed be
God bless your children, and happiness to
the fortunate one who is among your servants.
The fortunate one who serves among your faithful
نِعمَةthe blessing العَيشِof living مِنfrom أَياديكِyour favors عِنديfor me
وَجَمالُand the beauty الحَياةِof life مِنfrom إِنعامِكْyour bounty
For me, life's blessing comes from your favors,
The blessing of life comes to me from your hands
and life's beauty from your bounty.
And the beauty of life from your favors
لَوif بَذَلناwe offered up النُفوسَthe souls فيكِfor your sake كِباراًnoble
ماnot قَضَيناwe repaid القَليلَthe least مِنof إِكرامِكْyour generosity
Were we to offer up our noble souls for you,
If we were to sacrifice ourselves for your sake
we would not repay the least of your generosity.
We could not fulfill even a little of what you deserve
هَذَّبَrefined اللَهُGod مَنطِقيmy speech وَحبانيand favored me
بِالصَفِيِّwith the pure one الوَفِيِّthe faithful one مِنamong أَقلامِكْyour pens
God refined my speech and favored me
God refined my speech and granted me
with the pure, faithful one among your pens.
The eloquent, faithful pen that is mine
قَلَمٌa pen تَحمِلُbear الحَوادِثُthe turns of fate مِنهُfrom it
مِثلَthe like of ماwhat تَحمِلينَyou bear مِنof آلامِكْyour pains
A pen that makes the turns of fate endure
A pen that bears events
pains like those you bear.
Just as you bear suffering and pain
لَمdid not يَدَعleave مِنof سَلامِهاtheir peace غَيرَexcept ماwhat أَبfirst fragment of 'left'
قَتfinal fragment of 'left' إِغاراتُraids جُندِهاtheir troops مِنof سَلامِكْyour peace
It left them no peace beyond what
It left nothing of her greetings but what
their troops' raids had left of yours.
The raids of her soldiers stole from your greetings
لاmay not سَمَتrise فيin الوُجودِthe world أَعلامُbanners مُلكٍa kingdom
أَوunless يَكونَis السِماكُal-Simak (a star) مِنamong أَعلامِكْyour banners
May no kingdom's banners rise in the world,
No sign of any kingdom ever rose as high
unless al-Simak is among your banners.
Nor can any standard rival yours
