وَلَقَدand indeed عَجِبتُI marveled مِنَat الغُواةِthe misguided وَقَولِهُمand their saying
جَدَّgrew grave البَلاءُthe calamity فَماso what لَناis with us لاnot نَلعَبُwe play
Indeed, I marveled at the misguided and their saying:
“Calamity has grown grave—why should we not play?”
شَرِبواthey drank مُعَتَّقَةَwell-aged الخُمورِwines وَغَيرُهُمwhile others

شَرِبواthey drank المَنِيَّةَdeath حينَwhen سالَflowed الأُسرُبُthe lead
They drank well-aged wines, while others
drank death when the lead flowed.
فَرِحينَrejoicing بِالزَيتونِover Zaytun يُنهَبُbeing plundered غُدوَةًat daybreak
وَالقَتلُwhile slaughter يَستَلِبُsnatches away النُفوسَsouls وَيَنهَبُand plunders
Rejoicing as Zaytun is plundered at daybreak,
while slaughter snatches souls away and plunders.
إِنif يَعجَبواthey marvel لِلقاتِلينَat the killers فَأَمرُهُمthen their conduct
إِذas يَعكِفونَthey devote themselves عَلىto الغِوايَةِerror أَعجَبُmore astonishing
If they marvel at the killers, their own conduct,
as they cleave to error, is stranger still.
أَودىbrought death الرُماةُthe marksmen بِوادِعينَto peaceful people تَتابَعواwho followed one another
فيin غَيرِthe absence of ماany ذَنبٍfault يُعَدُّto be reckoned وَيُحسَبُand counted
The marksmen slew peaceful people, one after another,
without any fault to be reckoned or counted:
مِنamong them ذاهِبٍone going فيabout شَأنِهِhis business وَمُسَبِّحٍand one praising God
بَعدَafter الصَلاةِprayer لِربِّهِto his Lord يَتَقَرَّبُdrawing near
one going about his business, another praising God,
drawing near to his Lord after prayer.
كَبَّرتُI proclaimed God's greatness إِذاwhen قالواthey said رَماهُمhe shot them مُسلِمٌa Muslim
اللَهُGod أَكبَرُis greatest أَيَّwhat عَهدٍcovenant نَرقُبُcan we count on
I proclaimed God's greatness when they said, “A Muslim shot them.”
God is greatest! What covenant can we trust?
مِنّاfrom our own نُساءُwe are wronged إِذاwhen الخُطوبُcalamities تَحَفَّزَتready themselves to spring

وَبِناand through us إِذاwhen وَثَبَتthey pounce نُصابُwe are struck وَنُنكَبُand we are afflicted
We are wronged by our own when calamities brace to spring,
and through our own, when they pounce, we are struck and afflicted.
نَرتادُwe seek out أَسبابَmeans of النَجاةِdeliverance مِنَfrom العِدىthe foes
فَيَرُدُّناbut turns us back الأَدنىthe nearest إِلَيناto us الأَقرَبُthe closest
We seek means of deliverance from our foes,
but the one nearest and closest to us turns us back.
أُولاءِthose أَعداءُthe enemies of البِلادِthe land بَداbecame clear لَهُمto them

Those are the land's enemies; there appeared to them
the straight course of the path, yet they turned away and swerved.
نَصَرواthey aided العَدُوَّthe enemy فَهانَso weakened جانِبُthe flank of أُمَّةٍa nation

غُلِبَتwas defeated وَكانَthough were قَديمُهاits earlier generations لاnot يُغلَبُdefeated
They aided the enemy, and a nation's flank grew weak;
it was defeated, though its earlier generations were undefeated.
كُتِبَwas ordained العُقوقُfilial disloyalty لِمِصرَfor Egypt مِنfrom أَبنائِهاher sons
وَأَرىwhile I see الوَفاءَloyalty لِكُلِّfor every أُمٍّmother يُكتَبُordained
Egypt was allotted disloyalty from her own sons,
while I see loyalty allotted to every mother.
إِنّيindeed I أَىI see (apparently أرى) الرومِيَّthe Greek فيin حانوتِهِhis shop
يَرضىhe is pleased لِأَشباهِfor the semblances of الشُعوبِnations وَيَغضَبُand grows angry
Indeed, I see the Greek in his shop:
he rejoices and rages for mere semblances of nations,
وَيُعِزُّهُمand he honors them فيamong العالَمينَall peoples وَيَدَّعيand claims
لَهُمُfor them المَفاخِرَglories كُلَّهاall of them يَتَعَصَّبُhe is fiercely partisan
and honors them throughout the world, and claims
every glory for them, in partisan zeal.
وَيَجودُand he gives generously فيin الأَزَماتِcrises تَحُزبُهمthat beset them بِماof what
يَبتَزُّhe extorts مِنfrom مالِthe wealth of الغُواةِthe misguided وَيَسلِبُand plunders
And in crises that beset them, he gives freely of what
he extorts and plunders from the wealth of the misguided.
وَإِذاand when المَنِيَّةُdeath أَدرَكَتهُovertakes him قَضىhe bequeaths لَهُمto them
بِالوَفرِabundant wealth يُمنَحُto be granted وَالذَخائِرِand treasures توهَبُto be bestowed
And when death overtakes him, he bequeaths to them
abundance to be granted, and treasures to be bestowed.
كُلٌّall لَناof ours سَلَبٌis plunder وَكُلٌّand all قُوَّةٌis a force
نُرمىwe are assailed بِهاwith it إِنif حُمَّis decreed يَومٌa day أَشهَبُashen; grim
All is wealth plundered from us, and all a force
hurled against us if an ashen day is decreed.
هُمthey يَزعُمونَclaim فروقَFaruq لاحِقَةًdestined to join بِهِمthem
وَيَرَونَهاand they deem it الحَقَّthe right الَّذيwhich لاnot يَذهَبُpasses away
They claim Faruq will fall to them,
and deem it a right that can never lapse.
كَذَبواthey lie فَإِنَّfor indeed اللَهَGod مانِعُprotector of رُكنِهاher bastion
وَمُعِزُّهاand her exalter بِضَراغِمٍwith mighty lions لاnot تَكذِبُfalter
They lie! God guards her bastion,
and exalts her with lions that never fail.
الأُسدُthe lions رابِضَةٌare crouching عَلىupon أَسوارِهاher walls
وَالبَأسُand battle's fury يَهدِرُroars وَالرَدىand death يَتَوَثَّبُsprings forth
The lions crouch upon her walls;
battle's fury roars, and death leaps forth.
أَإِلىis it toward حِمىthe domain of عُثمانَUthman فيin عَليائِهِits grandeur
يَتَطَلَّعُaspire القَومُthe people الضِعافُthe weak الهُيَّبُthe timorous
Is it toward Uthman's domain, in all its grandeur,
that these weak and timorous folk aspire?
فَبِأَيِّthen with what شَيءٍthing يَتَّقونَwill they fend off حُماتَهُits defenders
وَيُدافِعونَand repel جُموعَهُمtheir hosts إِنif أُلِّبواthey are rallied
With what, then, will they fend off its defenders
and repel their hosts, if they are rallied?
أَبوثبةِis it with the leap of البَقّالِthe grocer بَينَamong سلالِهِhis baskets
أَمor نَزوَةِthe caper of الخَمّارِthe wine-seller ساعَةَwhen يَشرَبُhe drinks
With the grocer's leap among his baskets,
or the wine-seller's caper as he drinks?
هُمthey يَخطِبونَdeliver speeches عَلىfrom المَقاعِدِthe seats ماnot دَرواthey knew
أَنَّthat السُيوفَswords عَلىupon الجَماجِمِskulls أَخطَبُare more eloquent
They make speeches from their seats, unaware
that swords are more eloquent upon skulls.
ذاقواthey tasted الوَبالَdire consequences فَماyet not اِستَفاقَsobered up غُواتُهُمtheir misguided men
وَالناسُand people يَكشِفُreveals غَيَّهُمtheir error ماwhat جَرَّبواthey experienced
They tasted ruin, yet their misguided men have not sobered;
while people's experience lays their error bare.
إِنif يَجمَحواthey run wild فَالسَيفُthen the sword مِنamong أَخلاقِهِits traits
رَدُّrestraining الجَموحِthe headstrong وَقَودُand leading مَنthose who لاnot يُصحَبُcan be led along
If they run wild, it is the sword's nature
to curb the headstrong and lead those who will not be led.
إِنَّindeed الخَلائِفَthe caliphs لاnot يُفارِقُdeserts مُلكَهُمtheir dominion
لَيثٌa lion يَصولُcharges وَلاnor حُسامٌa sharp sword يَضرِبُstrikes
The caliphs' dominion is never without
a lion that charges or a sharp sword that strikes.
مَنwho عَلَّمَtaught الرومِيَّthe Greek حينَwhen يَرومُهُhe covets it
أَنَّthat العَرينَthe lion's den يَعيثُruns amok فيهِin it الثَعلَبُthe fox
Who taught the Greek, as he covets that realm,
that a fox may run amok in the lion's den?
اللَهُGod أَكبَرُis greatest هَلis there بِناin us مِنany ريبَةٍdoubt

أَمor نَحنُwe إِنif كَذَبواthey lie to الخَلائِقَhumankind غُيَّبُare absent
God is greatest! Have we any doubt,
or are we absent when they lie to humankind?
