they had indeed seen his two eyes streaming.

The swords erase—and realities have their judgment—

the kingdom of fantasy and the state of children.

A realm born of might and genuine valor is not

like a realm born of lies and slander.

O sons of the desert Arabs, shield from its shameful exposure

a claim that, by God's life, is unchaste.

There shrouded your eyes and hearts

curtains and coverings like the night.

Have you forgotten the overwhelming signs? There is no

    forgetfulness in history's pages.

The Turks are God's troops; without their valor,

no caller to prayer would remain in the world.

His righteous caliphs: He purified their love

for Him, and cleansed them of stains.

whether their affairs were hard or easy.

They protected their realm's bounds with the sword's edge,

and the loyal zeal of every fearless, vigorous warrior.

    In it, caliph follows caliph,

    and khagan surpasses khagan.

In the two Wests were kingdoms brought to ruin by

the frivolity of caliphs from Banu Qahtan.

Abd al-Aziz and his people brought them to ruin:

the libertine's people and the drunkard's followers.

His subjects suffer and his realm thirsts,

while he seeks refuge from it with one pampered and well-watered.

Egypt's shade nor Lebanon's hills sufficed.

A king whose crown and throne were surrounded by

an army of singing girls and a host of boys.

and protect him with the sharp swords of melodies.

making the world sway with trembling.

They shattered Islam's strength among its kings,

and struck its children with the fiercest sorrows.

They went on stirring discord, while around them

the raider's eye roved like a snake.

They contested the robe of a splendid realm,

fresh at its fringes, golden at its sleeves.

The enemy clothed himself in its shade, while they were stripped

before the children of time, naked as the unclothed.

The Prophet turned his face away in shame,

and Umayya turned away a shame-stricken face.

Musa and Tariq cried out in their graves,

    lamenting together and sobbing.

A calamity whose time lies far away, yet I deem it

the nearest calamity and the closest moment.

I weep; the Muslims' loss, and what they suffered

in the world, are what have made me weep most.

I weep for her bloodied breast, stirred

by what in her affliction stirred me and grieved me.

the eras of her inhabitants and her dwellings.

the many forms of passion and yearning for her.

two verses racing each other for all time.

and they are love and longing, joined together.

A realm fell among the cups, a funeral procession,

and passed upon a bier of sweet basil.
