O breaker of the covenant, no complaint and no regret!

God exacts vengeance, and the sword exacts justice.

You lampoon the Prophet and incite the polytheists against him.

Hold back! Woe to you—what are you perpetrating?

How many an abominable carcass issued from your mouth

when those carcasses fell at Badr!

That feast—may God disgrace its maker—

was meant for harm, with neither affection nor kindness.

Do you suppose God's Messenger is ignorant of it—

a plot whose very curtains exposed its secrets?

Rather, God revealed what you conceal, and it lay bare.

Woe to you! What hidden thing is not uncovered?

You intended harm to one whom no living person equals,

if glory and honor are contested among people.

Woe to whoever thought that God would forsake him

and that he could be snatched from God's right hand!

O Ka'b, why do you harm him and deny him?

And why this obsession with speaking falsehood, this passion?

You made your wealth a source of corruption for the rabbis,

where harm is sometimes drawn up and scooped out.

They confronted you with the truth when you went to question them,

and declared what they knew with certainty of the matter.

Then you said, "Go back; I have no gift for you.

The flowing spring has dried: neither modest giving nor extravagance.

My obligations suffice me; my wealth does not go beyond them

to surplus gifts, and there is no turning away from that."

They returned saying, "What a wretched man he is,

accepting speech only when it strays from truth!"

Then they changed course, speaking falsehood, and returned

with money that the proud company shuns.

Wretched the gift, and wretched the people: their conduct

and their master's conduct agree in error.

They are the Jews; if money gleamed for them

in the eye of Moses, God's interlocutor, they would not turn away.

Ibn Maslamah rose to champion the truth,

and for the Messenger, to show him how he would strike.

    شَاوِرْهُ فيها فَنِعمَ الحاذقُ الثَّقِفُ

    He said, "Seek out Sa'd if you intend to undertake it;

consult him about it: an excellent, skillful, clever man."

He spent three days in hunger,

and the seasoned planner had something to recount.

And he came with his companions, seeking permission, with

fear of God; they neither swerved nor strayed.

The Messenger said, "You may pursue your purpose among those people.

What harm can the shell's misleading appearance do to the pearl?

It is the hearts that matter: if their hidden depths are pure,

there is no fault or taint in your mouths."

They went and said to Ka'b, "You are our refuge,

the shelter we hope for in hardship, our protection.

Do you not see us hungry, with no food,

until destruction has almost overtaken our families?

Our companion has left us nothing to live on:

our provisions are plundered, our wealth swept away.

If you would lend us what could restore

life's spirit, you would be rain whose drops fall."

He said, "Your wives as pledges; no food for you

except in exchange for them." They said, "An outrageous demand!

Our natures refuse it, and we are restrained by

this beauty you have been given, and your luxurious life."

He said, "Your sons, then." They said, "Do not be harsh.

Misery and privation are easier than what you seek.

    إنّ الشدائدَ فيها تَسْهُلُ الكُلَفُ

    Take our weapons, though you burden us excessively;

in hardships, burdens become easy to bear."

He did not know their purpose as they mocked him,

and intended it as blackness to wrap themselves in.

    عنّا غياهِبُها وَانْجابَتْ السُّدُفُ

    He said, "I agree." They said, "A cloud of distress has lifted;

its deep darkness has left us, and the shadows have cleared."

They deferred him until the appointed hour of his coming to drink,

to gulp and sip his deadly poison.

upper rooms do not save a man from his death.

"Wait! My heart is afraid and pounding.

You are a man at war; it does not befit you

to answer men bearing grudges if they approach.

    I hear a voice I cannot trust,

as though it were blood flowing, or death itself."

He said, "Be quiet and leave me; he is my brother.

He fears for me, watches over me, and shows affection."

He went to meet him, while Islam smiled

and polytheism, marked by sorrow, trembled.

He met him among his companions, stepping closer and scented,

like a coquettish woman graced with a slender waist.

They said, "Will you walk to the Old Woman's Ravine? For in

this open space there is fruit for the soul to gather.

And look at the radiant moon and its beauty,

and marvel at how, after this, it will be eclipsed."

They walked to the ravine, with the decrees of fate following them,

under God's guidance: fate did not swerve, nor did they wander blindly.

Until, when they sat down, fate held its station,

and Death approached from its right to take his stand.

And there was his brother's hand above the parting of his hair,

as though plucking from freshly gathered flowers.

He sniffed it, speaking words to deceive him

about the perfume, while targeting him from behind.

The swords of God's Messenger kept striking him,

splitting what they struck of him and gouging it out.

How fine the cry he sent forth from his mouth!

At it, the roofs of his house almost fell.

His wife could not endure it; the cry was answered by

a thundering voice: "The quick-witted master has perished!

Sons of Qurayzah, rise from your beds!

Sons of al-Nadir, rush out for vengeance and draw near!

Where are the defenders, and what can grief accomplish?"

She weeps for him; after his death, what is there

    but weeping and streaming tears?

He who used to turn his side away in arrogance

lay slain by evening, with neither pride nor arrogance.

They returned with his head, cast down in disgrace

before the Messenger, who turned away in disdain.

The Jews flew in their tracks, but pursuit failed

to catch them: storm-like resolves hurled them onward.

God is greatest, and abundant praise is His:

a new victory, and fresh bounty from Him.

The Jews were terrified and came seeking an alliance.

The Jews were met with enmity—fine indeed the covenant and alliance!

Far from it! You have no covenant, even if pages carried

enough of your oaths to fill the earth.

'Abbad, say: "In poetry there is a reminder,

and its finest is what the forebears bequeathed."

    مَضَى النعيبُ وأودَى الشاعِرُ الخَرِفُ

    Sing to the companions, reciting the inspiration of truth;

the cawing has passed, and the senile poet has perished.
