Suwaylim, what talk is being fabricated in your house

By tongues that seek corruption and so lie?

Is Ibn Ubayy’s opinion such that beyond it

No man of reason has a view, and from it there is no escape?

A spiteful man, he cast ill fortune upon every hypocrite—

And oh, what evil is brought upon the people!

God’s Messenger sensed what they had done,

And God’s courier came with the truth, striving tirelessly.

So he said to Ammar, “I see the people have kindled

For themselves a fire, blazing before my eyes.

Now rise and reach them, before they are struck

By a grievous torment from which they have no escape.”

When he came to them, they denied it, then came forward

With evildoers’ words that turned away from the truth.

God’s Messenger said, “No, you said what

I have learned, and the unseen is not hidden from me.”

They said, despite their souls’ rage and rancor,

“Indeed, we were only talking idly and playing.”

They returned disgraced and remorseful; indeed, they

Are closer to evil, unless they repent.
