Time has known the deaths of heroes,

And held for you the mourning rites of generations.

    زَجَلُ المَآذِنِ مِن صَداها العالي

    Muslims in every land have a lament;

The minarets' chanting is part of its soaring echo.

You renewed for Islam, from among its martyrs,

A remembrance that renews every faded grief.

Thunderstruck by your death was the realm of hopes

And of mighty legacies and deeds.

Would that Death had granted you respite, and not shaken

The endeavors of a gallant man who never tarried.

You kept rushing into perilous depths, plunging through them,

With their manifold fears and abundant terrors,

Until Death enfolded you, showing no regard

For a people who revered you beyond measure.

You gave them life, yet killed yourself with the

Crushing burdens you made your soul bear.

You loved Egypt, and love stole away your life,

While the carefree, unconcerned man escaped with his life.

Have you sobered, or are you a man who decays, while

Your heart, untouched by decay, never sobers?

He shouldered life, and shall never die as time endures—

The reviver of ages and awakener of generations.

You shook the land's far reaches, and never passed a night

Save under threat of an earthquake.

Who will repel the raids after you, should someone cry,

'Defenders, help!' and persist in wailing?

Who will make those far away hear the complaint of a nation

For which you fought all your life, with the noblest struggle?

Who will take up the reed pen, whose fearsome scratching melts

The armored warrior's heart and the lion's soul?

Who will mount the pulpits, crying out

Among the people with an eloquent, fluent orator's cry?

Oh, my soul's anguish when a calamity strikes,

At which hearts leap in terror!

Oh, Egypt's anguish for the renewer of her glory,

And her rescuer from the stumbling of the ignorant!

O you who rend livers with your departure,

For God's sake, spare souls that are dear to you!

If parting has indeed been decreed, then grant a pause

To heal souls whose passing I have announced.

In vain! The souls' anguish for one departed

Whom the humpbacked bier bore away is nothing but delusion.
