And I know full well that this matter has its appointed span,

and that God's decree must come to pass.

Yet at times I can scarcely bear them—

sorrows that show me night while morning shines.

And our souls do indeed fear calamities,

even if our hopes and the omens prove true.

We bear cares of life more grievous than death,

and there is no life until someone shatters grief.

We watch for evil's reign to reach its end,

and hope for the good things God will bring about.

A dreadful spell of misfortune has dragged on for us,

and a terrifying calamity from those people has laid us low.

Ah, by the arrows that strike our hearts dead,

indeed, the very places of death have shuddered for the fallen.

We are at a loss: a man knows not which disaster

to shield himself from, or which calamity to fight.

Your aid, O Lord of bounty and all power!

For none but You can ward off what we lament.

Your aid! Those people have indeed plotted against us

    something that fearful souls dread.

We spend our day bewildered, watching for evil,

and keep vigil through the darkness, for our beds inspire dread.

Give the foes respite: life has its limit,

and a man will surely return to God one day.
