Are these the people's dwellings, changed by time?
Are these the dwellings of the people that time has changed?
So turn aside to them; let us weep for them, O travelers.
So they bent over it, weep for it O traveler!
محاerased آيهاtheir traces مَرُّthe passing العُصورِof the ages وَكرُّهاand their returning

The passing and returning of ages erased their traces;
Erase them, O passer of eras and their repeater
whenever an age passed, another came after it.
When an era passes, another repeats after it.
نُسائِلُهاwe question them أَينَwhere استقلَّdeparted قطينُهاtheir inhabitants
وَهَلand can تَنطقspeak الدارُthe dwelling المُعَطَّلةُthe abandoned القَفرُthe desolate
We ask them where their inhabitants have gone.
We ask her: where are her inhabitants?
And can the abandoned, desolate dwelling speak?
Does the abandoned, desolate abode speak?

And how many an eighty-year-old you see, with some of his gray hair dyed
You see an eighty year old whose tears
by red tears from prolonged weeping.
From prolonged weeping reddened his white hair.

He wept for a homeland whose former glory was destroyed
He wept for a nation whose glories of yore
by the calamities of an age whose traits include treachery.
Were destroyed by the betrayals of fate.

They raided it from south and north,
The south and the north attacked it
and did not depart until victory was granted to them.
And did not stop until victory was made possible for them.
أَلاbehold إِنَّهاindeed it is مصرُEgypt الَّتيwhich شَقِيَتsuffered بِناbecause of us
فَياso, oh وَيحَalas for مصرٍEgypt ماwhat الَّذيthat which لَقِيَتhas endured مِصرُEgypt
Behold, it is Egypt, which has suffered because of us!
Alas! It is Egypt that suffered because of us
So, alas for Egypt! What has Egypt endured?
So woe to Egypt! What did Egypt suffer?

Her stolen glory is gone; it is not reclaimed
Its lost glory cannot be restored
by her sons, so they have neither glory nor pride.
By its sons, who have no glory or pride.
هُمُthey رَقَدواthey slept عَنهاheedless of her فَطالَso grew long رُقادُهُمtheir slumber

They slept heedless of her, and their slumber grew long.
They slept away from it, and their sleep was prolonged
May I be your ransom! Rise, for dawn has broken.
I ransom you with my soul, arise, for dawn has risen!

Have you not yet seen that your authority has been divided up
Do you not see that your affairs have been divided
by the hands of those who strove? Have you any authority?
By foreign hands? Make haste! Do you have any control?

Is there no free man among you who, when he rises to call
Is there no freeman among you who, if he calls
to a worthy cause, is answered by another free man who steps forward?
To reform, a freeman will respond to him?

وَلاand no بهماin either of them إِذاwhen يُدعوانthey are both called لَهاto it وَقرُdeafness
Two noble men who have never yet shrunk from a great undertaking,
Two honorable men, when invited to a glorious deed,
and are not deaf when called to it.
Will not cower, nor refrain when called to it.

They are two mountains of resolve and prudence, both of them;
Both are resolute and prudent,
dreaded calamity fears them, and so does not befall them.
Feared by frightening tribulations, but they do not know fear.
هُماthey both الذُخرُthe reserve لِلأَوطانِfor the homelands إِنif جَلَّgrew grave حادِثٌa calamity

They are the homelands' reserve, should a calamity grow grave,
They are the treasure of nations, if disaster befalls,
leaving them unable to cope with it and without a reserve.
Leaving them helpless and deprived of treasure.
