The ailment of the people of the East is weakness of resolve.

And through this came the death of nations.

O sons of the East—and there is no East for you

Except through earnest effort and honoring pledges.

What ails you, that your gloom does not lift?

Do you love the deepening of woes?

Relieve it, and dispel its darkness

With powers that sweep away the dark.

    ضَلَّ سَعيُ الخائِنينَ النُوَّمِ

    You betrayed the covenant, so you spent the night asleep;

The striving of sleeping traitors has gone astray.

O sons of the East, awaken! It is only

False dreams that have deceived you.

Indeed, among the worst calamities is your sleep,

Heedless of an enemy who keeps vigil and has not slept,

Alert in both eyes and judgment alike,

And he presses onward like a sharp, cleaving sword.

Do not think glory an easy thing:

It lies in the lion's maw.

Such are we, and this is our condition:

There is none among us but a weakling who holds back,

Feeble in resolve, with a weak heart,

Not steadfast of heart in the crush.

O sons of the East, for a glory lost,

Whoever weeps for its loss is not to be blamed.

    Yesterday its edifice stood impregnable,

Soaring above the heads of the stars.

Today it has become like a ruined dwelling,

Obliterated, effaced by the hands of time.

It has grieved me, and grieved it too, that

It was destroyed by no hands but yours.

Restore it, and defend its domain,

And ward off from it the oppressor's hand.

And raise its structure until it is seen

As it once was, with proud, lofty peaks.

Indeed, I fear—with thirst in the East—

That it will be slaked with blood from its sons.

And I deem a young man's death better for him

Than a life between the two fangs of a speckled serpent.

The East has grown old and decrepit.

How my soul grieves for the decrepit elder!

Honor him, O sons of his, for indeed

The old man is not pleased unless he is honored.

Restrain your souls from their waywardness:

For the outcome of waywardness is prolonged regret.
