I was told what those who came together had done,

Recalling together the seats of ancestral honor.

They invoke Egypt—and Egypt is ancestral glory,

Lofty, and the honor of clan and companions.

So I was pleased; then I learned what they had not done,

So I grew angry, then was pleased, showing no favoritism.

They shook their hands free of those carried away

By runaway reason and wandering minds.

And they kept faith with their country through an admonition

Before which the misguided man recoiled upon his heels.

O strength of the valley for its day of hope,

And its armament against the calamity that strikes,

Tame your demands with deliberation, and know

That composure is the most effective of means.

If the right of humankind is mingled with falsehood,

The means of gaining it defy those who seek it.

Indeed, patience is a safeguard for the brave,

And prudence is the armor of the mighty one who springs to attack.

And if darkness veils a matter's aspects,

Then judgment is the brightest star and meteor.

Who would dispute over rights with their guardians,

And assail them with blame and reproach?

And say to the thirsty man whose water splashes,

Will you die, or live without a drink?

He drinks of death as its deadly poison overflows,

And sees pure water dwindling in the cups.

Who would turn life's advocates away from it,

And want it to be a scourge of torment for humankind?

Who would dispute with people over the midmorning sun?

Who would cover its face with a veil?

Do not give your enemies cause to gloat, for their eyes

Are fixed on you in your coming and going.

Nothing they see is a more delightful sight

Than disaster and affliction sweeping over you.

Block the path of evil, and avoid harm,

And handle affairs with wisdom and sound judgment.

The man of reason, if rulers legislate and impose discipline,

Lives by a code drawn from his reason and a book.

You are the guardians of right in your homelands,

And truth shatters the skeptic's doubt.

God is greatest! Have you, apart from her,

A homeland to seek through the ages to come?

Be mindful of God concerning a hope dear to Egypt,

Which the bearer of good news proclaimed at the gates.

Return the greeting calmly, and handle

Every curtain and veil with gentleness.

And take omens of good fortune from birds, and beware

Of a bird of ill omen, forever cawing.

Take refuge in life's rules of conduct, and watch

The rash impulses of resentful, angry people.
