    Leave the martyr to a people who do not forget him.

    And uphold for Egypt the pledge he upheld.

    What remembrance can you renew of a man of renown?

    The Nile is his life story, and time his remembrance.

    Confront the marksmen, and march around his banner,

    As an army of truth, in whose defense God shoots.

    Onward, swiftly, behind your leader!

    Onward! For this is among his counsels.

    سَنَّ الحِدادَ عليهِ يومَ منعاهُ

    He instituted struggle for you, defending a homeland through it;

    He instituted mourning for it on the day his death was announced.

    A day that rebelled: its tragedies defied

    The shrewdest men, and its calamities spread unchecked.

    It struck the eastern lands with a calamity that shook

    The western lands, which feared the terror of its reach.

    If the Nile takes fright or grieves, calamity has struck

    A world whose kingdoms are alike in their bereavement.

    هُمْ رحمةُ الله للدُّنيا ونُعماهُ

    Guides are not for one people or one kingdom;

    They are God's mercy to the world and His blessing.

    A soul whose place the lofty horizon guarded,

    And which God chose from among His most splendid gifts.

    It has the messengers' resolve; no weakness can slay it,

    Nor can wealth or rank make it reckless.

    He was never at risk from the world's temptations,

    While the bearer of the crown was enthralled by his worldly life.

    O memory of the martyr—we cannot repay his deeds

    Among those who strive, nor count his merits—

    Be for Egypt a life free from frivolity,

    And teach earnestness to a people whose life has turned wretched.

    Indeed, those who deemed homelands of little worth

    Brought upon the people what their nature rejects.

    They harnessed it to a cause it did not know,

    So it rushed headlong, raging, and its victims rushed too.

    الموتُ أيْسَرُ منها حِينَ تلقاهُ

    Then the dust cleared to reveal a terrifying catastrophe;

    Death, when you face it, is easier than that.

    فإنّما الأمرُ ما تطوِي خَفاياهُ

    Do not think the matter is what its appearances reveal;

    For the matter is only what its hidden depths conceal.

    فالقولُ أجْلَبُهُ للودِّ أَصفاهُ

    Forgiveness and pure goodwill for a people whose water source was tainted;

    For the purest speech best wins affection.

    Indeed, we fear the words of those who gloat over us:

    "One party blames, and another's efforts have gone astray."

    The foes filled our valley, while among us prevailed

    Such mutual strife that we lament its calamities.

    وأدركَ الخصمُ منّا ما تَمنَّاهُ

    Indeed, we acted ignorantly, so hatred split our unity;

    And the enemy won from us what he had wished for.

    God is greatest! This is the day we repel it—

    A calamity we feared from those who do not fear it.

    The martyr reached out to the parties, to unite them,

    From beside the grave, with his right hand and his left.

    And he sent forth his voice, offering counsel; so hastened

    Wounded Egypt, seeking healing in his whisper.

    Do people hear the counsel, or are they deaf?

    Or do some of the people not understand its meaning?

    Today the caravan's camel-driver sees his destination,

    And the bewildered, wayward man knows his ultimate fate.
