As long as I live, I shall send a curse after Saturday,

A panting runner from Time shall fly with it.

It swerves, but the curse meets it; it retreats, but the curse turns toward it,

Driving it back from what it planned and battling it.

It remains like a guilty outcast, against whom rise

Diverse bands, their evil flying all about.

Whenever it flings itself upon the earth, its broad paths narrow,

And its paths and open spaces bite down upon it.

It is the day, the day of ill omen; its harbinger cried out,

And a bird of ill fortune passed it from right to left.

It struck Egypt with a baleful crosswind and slipped away unscathed,

As an untamed ifrit of the jinn slips away.

So what a violent archer you are, and what a crashing blow—

It is death itself, save for what some jester boasts.

They say: 'Deputies, and a parliamentary chamber,

And a monarchy, and a constitution plainly founded on right,

And rulers dispensing widespread justice, and a ministry

That is the people, or a virtuous spirit from the people.'

Delusions of babbling people, who have no

Guide in judgment, nor counselor in sound reason.

They call for Egypt's independence, and for a state

Of illusion, which no crier has brought within hearing.

As though those who brought it had surpassed all limits,

As though whoever refuses falsehood were a spiteful foe.

As though the people's souls were drunk, as though they were

A phantom with which reason and creative gifts commune.

As though one who sings of its hateful memory

And of those who deceived the people with it were a wailing mourner.

I question my soul, distraught with sorrow:

Are these royal thrones I see, or slaughterhouses?

Indeed, it is a grievous day, and a scene

Of terror, and a crushing calamity for Egypt, the Quiver.

    فذلك يومٌ أغبرُ الوجهِ كالحُ

    So no welcome to Saturday, should its hour arrive;

For that is a day with a dust-covered, scowling face.

The days ask me for pardon, but I will not be appeased,

Nor grant pardon, until someone wipes Saturday away.

    طغت ريحُها فالشرُّ غادٍ ورائحُ

    May God requite Saad! These are indeed his cravings;

Their wind has raged unchecked, so evil goes forth at dawn and returns at dusk.

He laid open the sanctuary of Egypt and its Sudan together,

So an assassin pressed on, and an ambitious man penetrated deeper.

He is lenient with the country's enemies and attacks

His own people; the worst of protectors is the lenient one.
