The defenders raged for Ahmad's religion with a mighty rage,

Through which God was championed and the Qur'an exalted.

It hurled Hanotaux away, and he fell in a dust cloud

That flings and hurls the champions of men.

No sooner had he swooped down, assailing the Muslims with his tyranny,

Than fate, which never wrongs, rose to confront him.

He roused the defenders, and so roused every fearless warrior,

Swift in battle, sweeping horsemen away.

Gabriel advances with the banner, and Ahmad

Marches between the appointed successor and Hamza.

And is it that whenever its adherents stir up fanaticism,

The misguided man shouts at us and the alarmist clamors?

    يَدعو بِها داعِي الصَليبِ وَيَهتِفُ

    Every day fanaticism mounts a raid;

The herald of the Cross calls for it and cries aloud.

The Muslim peoples cried out, and were appalled

By the injustice of those who, but for politics, would have been fair.

They made the Cross her weapon, and she poured forth

As blood from its two sides; yet they did not recoil.

Indeed, the Cross, despite its followers' ignorance,

Surely sees and recognizes the path of the reformers.

Does Hanotaux set his sights on Muhammad's grave,

While Jesus circles it and keeps vigil?

Can he say that without it reeling with its people—

Paris, in terror—and the museum crashing down?

Then he shall see which kingdom is folded away,

And he shall know which throne is blown apart.

Alas for Islam! It has been abased, and shaken were

Its peoples by calamity's hands, so they were deemed weak.

Were it not for fanaticism, no terror beneath its shade

Would make nations reel or kingdoms tremble.

And I see that those whose inclinations have diverged,

Had they raged for it, would have united.

Hold back, heralds of evil! Awaiting you is

A day when peoples will keep being snatched away.

Events flounder in its engulfing depths,

And continue unfolding to reveal its terrors.

God has, concerning what you do to His religion,

A most faithful covenant and a promise never broken.

Hold back, for on that day His judgment is ordained.

Indeed, once the decree takes effect, it cannot be averted.

    وَأَرى المحجّة عِندَكُم أَن تَصدِفوا

    The Book unveiled the clear path, so look;

Yet I see that, in your view, the clear path is to turn away.

    إِنّ الكِتابَ عَلى النُفوسِ لَأَخوَفُ

    Seek refuge in the most dreadful thing your souls fear;

Indeed, the Book is more fearsome to souls.

Indeed, that which subdued the tyrants has no

Equal to be reckoned, nor likeness to be described.

Its lines drive forth the fleets of fate,

And its letters lead the cavalry of God.

And often it rode the Milky Way and rose aloft,

And down fell the lofty one that overlooked the billows.

A fortress at whose side religion takes refuge,

Azrael keeps watch, hovering above it.

The expanses suffer from the strength he melts away,

And grow cramped with the souls he snatches up.

Nothing lies between a rebel's leap and his retreat

But an arena for the defenders and a place to stand.
