Will you not abandon blind error, son of Hisn,

And follow the path, well-paved and level?

The Jews led you astray, and you went off seeking

The fruit of the palms—what a calamity you are!

Wretched indeed is the wage you earn from people

Who regard truth as a lowly station.

Would you consent to be their ally?

By your life, they are the worst of creation!

They assailed you with their envoys, hoping for victory,

But did not find you among men of sound judgment.

You called to your people, "Set out behind me!"

    Then one troop followed another.

You seek Muhammad and his paternal kin,

Men of valiant deeds and lofty aspirations,

Truth's defenders—it has none besides them—

When protective wrath and zeal boil over.

Muhammad warned you, but you refused right guidance

For yourself—indeed, yours is a wayward soul.

And you said, "Shall we leave our allies as prey,

While we are wielders of Mashrafi swords?"

    Steady, Uyaynah! What calamity

Has befallen you? What is the news, what is the matter?

And what is the echoing cry, son of Hisn,

Behind you in your far-off dwellings?

Back, Uyaynah! Do not abandon them,

For they cannot do without your defense.

    فَمَرْحَى ما الهزيمةُ كالمَنِيَّهْ

    You returned with your army, routed by terror;

So bravo! Defeat is not like death.

Had you come to Khaybar while she thirsted,

She would have served you a thirst-quenching cup of death.

    وأمرُ الله يَغلبُ كلَّ نِيَّهْ

    You meant to rescue her, but were diverted from her;

And God's decree overrules every intention.

Believe in your Lord, young man of Ghatafan,

For He surely has clear signs.

You returned to the Prophet, saying what no

Man with a modest soul would say:

"Am I not an ally of those you defeated?

Then grant me a gift from their spoils.

And I did refuse, and did not aid them

Against you; nor did I leave you alone out of fear."

He said, "You lie! You have no share of goodness,

And no secret intent is hidden from God.

Turn to Dhu al-Ruqaybah, for there

Is surely the splendid gift you desired.

Reflect: have you gained control over my affairs?

And has your foolish dream proved true?"

For every preacher of polytheism there is war—

A Khaybar-like war, triumphant in its battles.

The ways of keen, gleaming swords are fitter

For those who have made hypocrisy their nature.
