إذاwhen نَحنْwe عُدْناreturn يسلكُtakes الجانبَthe side الوَعْراrugged
The advocates of evil say, “Would that Muhammad,
when we return, would take the rugged side!
إذنthen لدفعناهُwe would push him إلىtoward الجانبِthe side الذيthat
تَنَكَّبَhe avoided نُؤذيهwe harm him ونُرهقُهand we burden him عُسْراhardship
Then we would push him toward the side that
he avoided, harming him and burdening him with hardship.”
ونبَّأهُand informed him مَولاهُhis Lord فازدادَso he increased قُوّةًin strength
علىupon قُوّةٍstrength واختارَand he chose ماwhat يَقمعُquells الشَّرّاevil
And his Lord informed him, so he gained strength
upon strength, and chose what would quell evil.

Then, when he drew near to Yathrib, someone said:
“Obey God's Messenger and comply with the command.

So proceed over the level ground and leave the rugged ground; for he
will travel it alone, desiring ease for you.”
وقالand he said تقدَّمْgo ahead of ناقتيmy she-camel ياO ابْنَson of ياسرٍYasir
وسِرْand walk خَلفَهاbehind her ياO ابنْson of اليمانِal-Yaman فماso how أحْرَىfitting
And he said, “Go ahead of my she-camel, O son of Yasir,
and walk behind her, O son of al-Yaman—how fitting!”
وسَارَand he went on فجاءthen came القومthe men يعدونrunning خلفهbehind him

And he went on; then the men came running behind him,
while darkness had spread a veil around them.
ونكَّرand disguised كلٌّeach وَجْهَهُhis face بِلثَامِهِwith his face-veil
وماand not نَكَّرواthey disguised إلاexcept الخيانةَtreachery والغَدْراand betrayal
And each disguised his face with his face-veil,
yet they disguised nothing but treachery and betrayal.
رَمَوْاthey assailed ناقةthe she-camel of الهادِيthe Guide بأشخاصِwith figures of جِنَّةٍjinn
تَخوضُwading through إليهاtoward her اللّيلَthe night فانتفَضْتso she shuddered ذُعراin terror
They assailed the Guide's she-camel with figures of jinn,
wading through the night toward her; so she shuddered in terror.
وأمسىand became رَسولُthe Messenger of اللهِGod يَهوِيwas tumbling مَتاعُهhis baggage
علىonto الأرضِthe ground إلاexcept ماwhat تماسكَheld fast فَاسْتَذْرَىso found shelter
And God's Messenger's baggage was now tumbling
onto the ground, except what held fast and found shelter.
وقالand he said انْطلِقْgo ياO ابنَson of اليَمانِal-Yaman فَرُدَّهُمْthen drive them back
وياand O صاحبيmy companion لاdo not تبتئِسْbe distressed وَالْزَمِand hold fast to الصَّبْراpatience
And he said, “Go, O son of al-Yaman, and drive them back;
and, my companion, do not be distressed; hold fast to patience.”
فَكَرَّso he charged عليهمat them كَرَّةَa charge اللّيثِof a lion ضَارباًstriking

وُجوهَthe faces of مَطاياهُمtheir mounts ولمَand did not يألُهمْspare them زَأْراroaring
So he charged at them with a lion's charge, striking
the faces of their mounts, and sparing them no roar:

“Away with you! Away with you, partisans of unbelief! You
are surely enemies of the Lord of humankind—what monstrous unbelief!”

They turned away in haste, without finding their cure,
nor did they quench those embers of their rancor.
