Witness, O Egypt, the deeds of your sons,

And behold the signs, time after time.

The turns of fate laid bare what lay hidden in them,

And so swept doubt from the face of certainty.

That is earnestness; so taste its bitterness,

And take it from the hands of the players.

Drink the brimming cup, and hear

The drunkard's admonition among the drinkers.

You betrayed righteousness when you failed to discern

The place of the traitor and the righteous, trustworthy man.

You make affairs a chaos, with no

    Clear order for the discerning.

And you see all people as alike,

Whether valiant men or fallen, lifeless men.

Is it through your delusion that you reward those

Who corrupted affairs with the reformers' reward?

    And place men who broke

Your firmest covenant in the station of the sincere?

Come now, Egypt, have you not yet learned

The events of time in years gone by?

Come now, Egypt, remember them, and see

What a people yours is, afflicted and sorrowful.

And entrust the matter to God, for there is

No helper for you in this world but Him.

The support of lands in their hardship,

And the succor of oppressed nations.

He wards off terrors from their afflicted ones,

When no defense can be hoped for from helpers.

And revives what has died of their hopes,

With radiant face and shining brow.

Sovereign of dominion, His judgments have taken effect,

And His decrees have run their course throughout the worlds.

    جَلَّ ذو القُوَّةِ وَالحَولِ المَتينْ

    No soul has power in His dominion;

Exalted is the Possessor of power and steadfast might.

A tremor from His fleet sweeps away

    The fleets of powerful kings.

And if His army one day resolves to act,

Then death awaits the victorious armies.

Ask the dusty earth how many states

Have had their traces vanish among the long departed.

It bore them for ages; then they were folded away

Into the ages of the earliest departed.

They lay still in a corner of its belly,

That has room for every living one of us.

Ask about the crowns, and look: do you see

In it anything of the rulers' thrones?

And ponder whether they have within its depths

    Any soldiers, banners, or ships.

Turn over the soil: how many lie within it—

    Fallen states and buried realms!

An exhibition of generations: if you roam through it,

Take your time, and move slowly among those who roam.

And let the lamp within its darkness be

The lesson of death for a people who see.

This world is only a life that passes,

And a tale useful to those who remember.

    فَاِنظُري يا مِصرُ ماذا تَأمُرينْ

    The truth has become clear to an ignorant people;

So consider, Egypt, what you command.

Fear not: among His signs are

Those that safeguard your worldly life and faith.

Ask Him for whatever you wish, and await

His judgment on your afflicted, captive people.

Is it the turns of fortune that deny us justice?

Then exalted is God, the best of judges.

How the sober-minded people's wrath erupted.

How can we forget them when so little time has passed?

How can we forget the trustworthy and true?

And the mothers of the faithful wept for them.

O my people, for the bereaved mothers, worn thin

By long lamenting when their sons departed!

O my people, for the orphans left behind them,

And the widows and the languishing old men!

Guard her: surely, if Egypt is lost,

The Muslims' heritage in this world is lost.
