عامٌa year أَهابَsummoned بهit الزّمانُTime فأقبلاand it came forward
عامٌ أَهابَ به الزّمانُ فأقبلا
يُزجِيdrives المواكبَthe processions بالأهِلَّةِwith new moons حُفّلاfestively adorned
يُزجِي المواكبَ بالأهِلَّةِ حُفّلا
A year that Time summoned, and it came forward,
driving processions adorned with new moons.
مَلَكَcommanded الحوادثَevents فهيand they منamong أجنادهِhis troops
مَلَكَ الحوادثَ فهي من أجنادهِ
تأتيthey come وتَذهبُand they go فيthrough الممالكِthe kingdoms جُوّلاroaming
تأتي وتَذهبُ في الممالكِ جُوّلا
It commands events, and they are among its troops,
coming and going, roaming through kingdoms.
آناًat times يَهُدُّhe brings down بهاwith them الشُّعوبَthe peoples وتارةًand at other times
آناً يَهُدُّ بها الشُّعوبَ وتارةً
يبنيhe builds لهاfor them المُلكَthe realm الأشمَّthe lofty الأطولاthe most enduring
يبني لها المُلكَ الأشمَّ الأطولا
At times it brings peoples down with them, and at times
it builds for them a lofty, enduring realm.
ياO أيّهاyou العامُnew year الجديدُdo you not أماsee? No, do you not see? No, do you not see? No, do you not see? No, do you not see? No, do you not see? No, do you not see? No, do you not see? يا أيّها العامُ الجديدُ أما ترى
أمَمَpeoples الكتابِof the Book حِيالَbefore مَهدِكَyour cradle مُثّلاgathered
أمَمَ الكتابِ حِيالَ مَهدِكَ مُثّلا
O new year, do you not see
the peoples of the Book gathered before your cradle?
فَزِعَتْthey fled for refuge إليكَto you تقصُّrecounting منfrom أنبائهاtheir affairs
فَزِعَتْ إليكَ تقصُّ من أنبائها
ماwhat رَاعَstartled راويةَthe narrator الدُّهورِof the ages فأجفلاand he recoiled
ما رَاعَ راويةَ الدُّهورِ فأجفلا
They have fled to you, telling of their affairs
that startled the narrator of ages and made him recoil.
وتَسوقُand they bring بينbefore يديكyou منfrom آمالهاtheir hopes
وتَسوقُ بين يديك من آمالها
ماwhat أَخلفَfrustrated الزّمنُtime العَسوفُthe harsh وعطّلاand thwarted
ما أَخلفَ الزّمنُ العَسوفُ وعطّلا
They bring before you, among their hopes,
what harsh time has frustrated and brought to a halt.
عبثتtoyed بهاwith them الأعوامُthe years قبلكbefore you فانجلتand passed away
عبثت بها الأعوامُ قبلك فانجلت
عنleaving لاعجٍa burning pain صَدَعَthat split القُلوبَthe hearts وماand did not انجلىfade
عن لاعجٍ صَدَعَ القُلوبَ وما انجلى
The years before you toyed with them, then passed away,
leaving a burning pain that split hearts and did not fade.
صُنْهاguard them عنِfrom اليأسِdespair المُميتِthe deadly وكنand be لهاfor them
صُنْها عنِ اليأسِ المُميتِ وكن لها
عامَa year الحياةِof life تَنَلْyou will attain مراتِبَهاtheir ranks العُلىthe highest
عامَ الحياةِ تَنَلْ مراتِبَها العُلى
Guard them from deadly despair, and be for them
a year of life; you will attain their highest ranks.
رَفعتْthey raised علىupon آيِthe verses الكتابِof the Book بِناءَهاtheir structure
رَفعتْ على آيِ الكتابِ بِناءَها
زمناًfor a time فهدَّand it struck down الهادمينthe destroyers وزَلْزَلاand shook them
زمناً فهدَّ الهادمين وزَلْزَلا
For a time they raised their structure upon the Book’s verses,
and it struck down the destroyers and shook them.
أَرِناshow us كِتابَكَyour book أوor فَدَعْهthen leave it مُحجَّباًveiled
أَرِنا كِتابَكَ أو فَدَعْه مُحجَّباً
إنّاindeed we نَراهُsee it علىin المغيبِthe unseen future مُؤمَّلاhoped for
إنّا نَراهُ على المغيبِ مُؤمَّلا
Show us your book, or leave it veiled;
we see it in the unseen future, full of hope.
لسناwe are not بنيchildren of الخُلفاءِthe caliphs إنif لمnot نَبْنِهwe build it
لسنا بني الخُلفاءِ إن لم نَبْنِه
مجداًas glory علىabove هامِthe heads of النُّجومthe stars مُؤثَّلاfirmly established
مجداً على هامِ النُّجوم مُؤثَّلا
We are no children of the caliphs if we do not build it
as an established glory above the heads of the stars.
اللهGod علّمناtaught us الحياةَlife رشيدةًwisely
الله علّمنا الحياةَ رشيدةً
وأبىand refused عليناfor us أنthat نَضِلَّwe stray ونجهلاand be ignorant
وأبى علينا أن نَضِلَّ ونجهلا
God taught us to live wisely
and would not have us stray or remain ignorant.
قُلْsay للأُلىَto those who جَهِلواwere ignorant اذْهبواgo away بكتابكمwith your book
قُلْ للأُلىَ جَهِلوا اذْهبوا بكتابكم
إنّاindeed we لَنَتَّبِعُshall surely follow الكتابَthe Book المُنزلاthe revealed
إنّا لَنَتَّبِعُ الكتابَ المُنزلا
Say to those who are ignorant: Take your book away;
we shall follow the revealed Book.
الحقُّtruth عِصمتُناis our safeguard نَصونُwe protect سِياجَهُits boundary
الحقُّ عِصمتُنا نَصونُ سِياجَهُ
بالعلمِwith knowledge يَمنعُit prevents أنthat نُضامَwe be wronged ونُخْذَلاand be forsaken
بالعلمِ يَمنعُ أن نُضامَ ونُخْذَلا
Truth is our safeguard; we protect its bounds
with knowledge, which keeps us from oppression and abandonment.
والعدلُand justice قُوّتُناis our strength التيwith which نرمِيwe strike بهاwith it
والعدلُ قُوّتُنا التي نرمِي بها
أَعْدَىthe fiercest العِدَىof foes فَنُصيبُand we strike منهhim المقتلاthe vital spot
أَعْدَى العِدَى فَنُصيبُ منه المقتلا
And justice is our strength, with which we strike
the fiercest foe and hit his vital spot.
ياO باعثَinstigator of الحربِwar العَوانِthe raging تَشوقُهit draws him
يا باعثَ الحربِ العَوانِ تَشوقُه
فيشُبُّهاand he kindles it مِلءَthe full extent of الممالكِthe kingdoms مُوغِلاpressing far into them
فيشُبُّها مِلءَ الممالكِ مُوغِلا
O instigator of raging war, drawn to it,
you kindle it until it spreads through the kingdoms.
أَعِدِreturn المناصِلَthe blades فيinto الغُمودِthe sheaths بريئةًunstained
أَعِدِ المناصِلَ في الغُمودِ بريئةً
فالحقُّfor truth إنif حاربتَyou fight أقطعُsharper مُنْصَلاa blade
فالحقُّ إن حاربتَ أقطعُ مُنْصَلا
Return the blades to their sheaths, unstained:
if you fight, truth is a sharper blade.
وَدَعِand leave المعاقلَthe strongholds والحُصونَand the fortresses فلنfor you will not ترىfind
وَدَعِ المعاقلَ والحُصونَ فلن ترى
كالعلمِlike knowledge حصناًa fortress للشُّعوبِfor peoples ومعقِلاand a refuge
كالعلمِ حصناً للشُّعوبِ ومعقِلا
Leave strongholds and fortresses; you will find
no fortress or refuge for peoples like knowledge.
المجدُglory للبطلِbelongs to the hero المصونِkept pure لِواؤُهhis banner
المجدُ للبطلِ المصونِ لِواؤُه
عنfrom أنbeing يُعَلِّraised منfrom الدّماءِblood ويُنهَلاand drenched
عن أن يُعَلِّ من الدّماءِ ويُنهَلا
Glory belongs to the hero whose banner is kept
from being raised on blood and drenched in it.
ياO طلعةَdawn of العامِthe year الجديدِthe new تهلَّليshine brightly
يا طلعةَ العامِ الجديدِ تهلَّلي
فالعهدُfor the custom بالأعوامِof years أنis that تتهلّلاthey shine brightly
فالعهدُ بالأعوامِ أن تتهلّلا
O dawn of the new year, shine brightly;
years are known to arrive with a bright face.
طَلعتْthey rose علىupon الإسلامِIslam فيduring إقبالِهits flourishing
طَلعتْ على الإسلامِ في إقبالِه
نُوراًas light منfrom الأُفُقِِthe horizon المُحبَّبthe beloved مُقبلاcoming forth
نُوراً من الأُفُقِِ المُحبَّب مُقبلا
They rose upon Islam in its flourishing days
as light coming from the beloved horizon.
