أباO Abu ذرٍّDharr رَحلتَyou set out علىupon بعيرٍa camel
لوif اَنَّthat الذَّرَّtiny ants يَلْمَسُهُtouched it لَهدَّهْwould surely have felled it
O Abu Dharr, you set out upon a camel;
Abu Dharr, you journeyed on a camel
Had tiny ants touched it, they would have felled it.
If a speck of dust touched it, it would collapse
بَراهُwore it down السَّيرُtravel حالاًstage بعدafter حالٍstage
فأوْهَنَthus weakened عَظْمَهُits bones وأذابَand melted جِلْدَهْits skin
Travel wore it down, stage after stage,
The travel showed him one state after another
Thus weakening its bones and melting its skin.
So it weakened his bones and melted his skin
عَمدتَyou turned إلىto متاعِكَyour baggage لمdid not تَدَعْهُyou leave it
عليهِon it ولمand did not يَدَعْكَleave you الضّعفُweakness عِنْدَهْbeside it
You turned to your baggage, not leaving it
You went for your belongings, not leaving them behind
On the camel; nor did weakness keep you beside it.
Despite his weakness, he did not leave you behind
شددتَyou strengthened قُواكَyour strength إذwhen وَهَنتْgrew weak قُواهُits strength
وَرُضْتَand mastered الأمرَthe matter إذwhen أبصرتَyou saw جِدَّهْits gravity
You mustered your strength when its strength failed,
You strengthened your power when his power weakened
And mastered the matter when you saw its gravity.
And you accepted the matter when you saw its seriousness
وسِرْتَand you went on فكنتَso you were أصلبَfirmer منهthan it عَزماًin resolve
وأصدقَand truer هِمّةٌin purpose وأشَدَّand stronger نَجْدَهْin courage
And you went on, firmer than it in resolve,
And you walked on, becoming firmer in resolve than him
And truer in purpose, and greater in courage.
With the most truthful determination and the most intense diligence
مَشَيْتَyou walked تُريدُyou seek وَجْهَthe face اللَّهِGod حتّىuntil
بلغتَyou reached رَسولَهُHis Messenger ولَقيتَand you met جُنْدَهْHis troops
You walked, seeking the face of God, until
You walked wanting the face of God until
You reached His Messenger and met His troops.
You reached His Messenger and met His troops
رأوكَthey saw you تَؤُمُّهُمْyou approach them فرداًalone فقالواso they said
أخٌa brother فيin اللَّهِGod يخشىfears اللَّهَGod جُهْدَهْwith all his might
They saw you approaching them alone, and said:
They saw you leading them alone, so they said
A brother in God, who fears God with all his might.
A brother in God, who fears God with all his effort
وقالand he said أتىhas come أبوAbu ذَرٍّDharr فأهلاًso welcome
بِصاحبناto our companion الذيwho ماnot خانbetrayed عَهْدَهْhis pledge
And he said: Abu Dharr has come—welcome
And it was said, Abu Dharr has come, so welcome
To our companion, who never betrayed his pledge.
Our companion who did not betray his covenant
ألاbehold إنّindeed الذيthe one who يَسْعَىhastens إليناtoward us
ليمشيsurely walks وَحْدَهُby himself ويَموتُand will die وَحْدَهْby himself
Behold, the one who hastens toward us
Lo, the one who strives towards us
Surely walks alone, and will die alone,
Walks alone, dies alone, and is resurrected alone after this
وَيُبْعَثُand will be raised وَحْدَهُby himself مِنfrom بعدِafter هذاthis
وَسُبحانَand glory be to الذيHim who يَختارُchooses عَبْدَهْHis servant
And will be raised alone after this.
Glory to Him who chooses His servant
And glory be to Him who chooses His servant!
