You wept and made the crumbling ruins weep;
so you see nothing but weeping eyes.

فَبورِكتَso blessed be you مَدعُوّاًas one called وَبورِكتَand blessed be you داعِياas one calling
Love for their dwellers summoned you, and you called to the ruins;
so blessed are you when called, and blessed when calling.
لَقَدindeed هاجَstirred رَسمُthe trace of الدارِthe dwelling وَجدَكَyour grief إِذwhen عَفاit faded away

Indeed, the dwelling's trace stirred your grief when it faded,
and it is grief enough for you to see the trace effaced.

God be with you! I do not blame you for a shed tear
with which you watered those thirsty ruins.

And before you, a people's departure made me weep;
I loathed staying on after them, and living on.

May God reward its people on our behalf and grant them
the reward of one who has become a guide to the truth.

They are the people who accepted no aim but glory,
and preferred nothing but eminence and noble endeavors.

They built it upon the crowns of the stars, nor could
any builder have attained such a height.

So now it lies in calamities' path, humbled by them,
though for ages it had humbled calamities.

They entrusted it to us, but it was lost, and I see
among the companions only a helpless laggard.

Whenever I raise my voice, seeking to rouse him,
so he may revive the dead or restore the past,

he grows dull and dust-gray, and trembles in fear,
and recoils in aversion, turning away and keeping his distance.

But if a caller to error summons him, he answers,
and willingly engages in base deeds and disgraceful acts.

That is not the sole affliction of the people in Egypt;
for there are calamities that toss the steadfast mountains about.

They brought them upon us; we cannot fend them off—
afflictions and disasters we are weary of bearing.

We have long acquiesced and endured, hoping these woes would end,
yet through the days they refuse to do anything but linger.

Our hopes stretch on to no avail;
so may none among us go on prolonging hopes.

Take heed: turns of power come and pass away,
while God's decree has ever held sway among humankind.

If a counselor could guide one who has gone astray,
by your fortune, you would find no one astray in Egypt.

I have kept offering it the counsels of one who cares;
whoever among the peoples had understanding took them to heart.

They greet it from every horizon and make their way
through its regions at evening and morning.

So take the affliction lightly; do not be distressed by it,
for neither you nor I control the affairs of the ignorant.
