A sorrow in your heart grows calm and takes fright,

And a passion in your soul departs and returns.

You forget the setting suns, now that there has appeared

A dawn from your eyelids for love of the beloved.

Your tears wavered behind a resolve

That melted; then both overflowed, rushing forth.

You may spend the night absorbed in yearning,

Whether your pillow grows restless or the bed writhes.

Can a weary eyelid bear the burden of sleep,

And can an aching heart obey patience's decree?

Egypt has made you lovesick; and Egypt, in love's sanctuary,

Is a home that embraces lovers and gathers them together.

The hearts' ardor is gathered as tribute for her—but in truth,

The hearts are gathered whole, and the ribs as well.

    كُلٌّ بِها صَبٌّ وَكُلٌّ مولَعُ

    You are not alone in being enamored of al-Kinana;

All are lovesick for her, and all are enthralled.

A home that gives everyone far away a burning longing,

Whose burning ache the dwellings and homesteads feel.

Proud brows have been lowered from their heights

By her lofty prestige and her higher honor.

The cup of chaste love upon her right hand

Is burning hot; the yearning lover draws near it and is struck down.

One martyr walks upon another; yet he merely

Goes in his companions' footsteps and follows them.

O Egypt, for every soul you are a goal

Of great moment; and for every heart you are an object of desire.

In every resting place a sorrowful one laments,

And on every bed a stricken one takes fright.

The Nile glides through you with free rein,

So beauty grows, and loveliness wells up.

    لَكِ مِن رَوائِعِها الطِرازُ الأَبدَعُ

    He who made beauties a sign has favored you;

Yours, among their marvels, is the most exquisite pattern.

    يَجني هَواكِ عَلى القُلوبِ فَتَشفَعُ

    Of beauty's gifts, every splendid one is yours;

Love of you wrongs the hearts, and each gift intercedes.

Longing's excuse is that love of you is honor,

Exalted, and a glory no seeker can surmount.

You bring souls to life by killing; so no hopes

Are folded away with you, nor is blood wasted.

With my blood and all blood dear to me, I would ransom

Your pure blood, should a calamity strike you.

I have decreed: every festival is a funeral,

Until your awaited festival spreads its shade over you.

God has willed it; who then can alter His decree?

And He has ordained the decree; who then can turn it back and prevent it?

Go forth with His blessings, and hold fast

To a cord of His care that cannot be severed.

You walk thirsting for aspirations and hopes,

And it is as though the watering place were walking toward you.

    اليَأسُ يَكذِبُ وَالتَطَيُّرُ يَخدَعُ

    Do not leave those who fear ill omens to their despair;

Despair lies, and fear of ill omens deceives.

On every horizon, if you look, and in every star,

A light of hope glows and shines.

So take the glad tidings from my mouth, and contemplate

The signs of your Lord, and see what He does.
