دَعواleave aside اِستِقلالَindependence مِصرَEgypt فَقَدfor indeed عَرَفناwe have learned
خَفاياthe secrets الأَمرِof the matter وَاِنكَشَفَand was lifted الغِطاءُthe veil
Leave aside Egypt’s independence, for we have learned
They called for Egypt's independence, so we've
the secrets of the matter, and the veil has been lifted.
come to know the hidden aspects of the matter and the cover lifted.
دَعواleave aside اِستِقلالَكُمyour independence ياO قَومُpeople إِنّاindeed we
مِنfrom اِستِقلالِكُمyour independence هَذاthis بَراءُfree of involvement
Leave aside your independence, O people; we
They called for your independence, O people, but we
disavow this independence of yours.
disavow this independence of yours.
خُذوهُtake it إِلىto المَقابِرِthe graves فَاِدفُنوهُthen bury it
وَقولواand say لِلرَئيسِto the leader لَكَfor you البَقاءُcontinued life
Take it to the graves, then bury it,
Take it to the graves and bury it
and tell the leader, “May you live on.”
and say to the president, "long live!"
فَإنso if تَكُthere is خُطَّةًa plan أُخرىanother فَمَرحىthen hurrah
وَإِلّاand otherwise فَالتَذَمُّرُthen discontent وَالإِباءُand defiance
So if there is another plan, then hurrah!
If there be another scheme, then so be it,
And otherwise, discontent and defiance!
otherwise there remains but discontent and refusal.
دَعوهاleave it aside ضَجَّةًan uproar لاno خَيرَgood فيهاin it
فَماfor … not يُغنيavails الضَجيجُthe clamour وَلاnor العُواءُthe howling
Leave it aside—an uproar with no good in it;
Leave it clamor without good,
for neither clamour nor howling avails.
for neither hue nor cry avail.
أَتُغضِبُكُمdoes … anger you? حَمِيَّةُthe fervour كُلِّevery حُرٍّfree man
تُهَيِّجُهُrouses him المُروءَةُhonour وَالوَفاءُand loyalty
Does the fervour of every free man anger you,
Does the zeal of every free man anger you,
whom honour and loyalty rouse?
provoked by his chivalry and loyalty?
خُذواtake سُفهاءَكُمyour fools ياO قَومُpeople عَنّاaway from us
فَقَدfor indeed طالَhas lasted long التَحَلُّمُforbearance وَالحَياءُand modesty
Take your fools away from us, O people,
Take away your fools from us, O people,
for forbearance and modesty have lasted long.
for patience and propriety have long endured.
أَنُعرِضُshall we turn away? عَنfrom مَقالَتِكُمyour words وَتَأبىwhile refusing
رِقابُnecks السوءِof wickedness ذَلِكُمُthat (addressing you all) البَلاءُthe affliction
Shall we turn away from your words, while
Shall I turn away from your talk though
wicked necks refuse? That is the affliction.
the necks of evil refuse? That is your affliction.
أَأَحرارٌfree men? نُجاهِدُwe struggle أَمor تِجارٌmerchants
وَهَلand is there? فيin مِصرَEgypt بيعٌselling أَوor شِراءُbuying
Are we free men who struggle, or merchants?
Are we free men who struggle, or merchants?
And is there selling or buying in Egypt?
Is there in Egypt buying or selling?
