O sons of Saʿd ibn Bakr, welcome!
O sons of Sa'd ibn Bakr, greetings!
Rush to confront the host, singly and in bands.
Attack the people one by one and with vigor.
غَشِيَتْكُمhas enveloped you منfrom يَهودٍJews فِتنةٌstrife
كالحَبِيِّlike a low-lying cloud الجَوْنِblack يُرخِيlets down الهيدباthe rain-fringe
Strife from the Jews has enveloped you,
The sedition of the Jews has overwhelmed you
Like a black, low-lying cloud letting down its rain-fringe.
Like the hot south wind that stirs up the flames.
إنّindeed فيin خَيبَرKhaybar منof سُمْرِbrown القناspears
عَدَدَas many as التمرِthe dates ومنand of بيضِwhite الظُّبَىsword-edges
Indeed, in Khaybar there are dusky spears,
In Khaybar there is honey from bee hives
As many as the dates, and white sword-edges.
And dates in abundance like the eggs of ostriches.
هِيَthey للأبطالِfor heroes أزكىchoicest مطعماًas food
ياO بنيsons of سعدٍSaʿd وأشهىand most delectable مَشرباas drink
For heroes they are the choicest food,
These are the most delicious foods for warriors,
O sons of Saʿd, and the most delectable drink.
O sons of Sa'd, and the most pleasing drinks.
هلdo ترونyou see اليومَtoday إلاanything but مِقنباًa cavalry troop
منof حُماةِdefenders of الحقِّtruth يتلوfollows مِقنباa cavalry troop
Do you see today anything but a cavalry troop
Do you not see today only lances
Of truth's defenders following another troop?
Of the defenders of truth reciting poems?

It is Ali's day, so stand firm,
Today is the day of Ali, so be patient,
Or turn aside from him on a grim, ash-gray day.
Or avoid it as a day of misfortune.
ياO بنيsons of سعدِSaʿd بنson of بكرٍBakr إنّهindeed he is

مارِجُthe flame of الهيجاءِbattle يُزجِيdrives onward اللَّهباthe blaze
O sons of Saʿd ibn Bakr, indeed he is
O sons of Sa'd ibn Bakr, it is
The flame of battle, driving the blaze onward.
The kindling of strife, igniting the flames.

لاdo not تكونواbe فيin لَظاهاits blaze حَطَباfirewood
Beware of it, and have mercy on yourselves;
Beware of it and have mercy on yourselves,
Do not be firewood in its blaze.
Lest you become fuel for its intense heat.

A man from among you led him to you,
A man led it against you out of fear of being killed
Fearing death and dreading destruction.
And dread of mishap.

Your spy he turned into an eye upon you;
He made his eye your eye,
So marvel at how the matter was reversed.
And you were amazed at how the matter was overturned.

The army advanced, so you melted in terror;
The army marched and you scattered into pieces,
And battle's fury hurled itself forth, so you flew in retreat.
And valor collapsed so you fled in panic.
ليسis not غيرother than النّهبِplunder ماwhat يمنعهhe protects it
منكمamong you اليومَtoday امرؤٌany man أنthat يُنهبَاit be plundered
Nothing but plunder is what is protected
Nothing but loot prevents them
By any man among you today from being plundered.
From plundering you today, O men ready to be plundered!
نكبةُcalamity of التَّمرِthe dates فلولاso, were it not for شؤمُهits ill omen
لمwould not يَذُقْtaste آلامَهَاits pains منwhoever نُكِباwas afflicted
The calamity of the dates! But for their ill omen,
The setback of the dates - if not for its ill omen,
No one afflicted would have tasted its pains.
None who suffered its sorrows would have tasted them.
أفماhave you not, then جَرّبتُمُyou have tested القومَthe people الأُلىwho
خُلِقُواthey were created للشّرِّfor evil فيمنamong those who جَرَّباtested
Have you not tested those people who
Have you not already tested the wretched people
Were created for evil, along with others who tested them?
Created for evil, whoever has tested them?

They are the earth's pestilence, or its plague.
They are the plague of the earth or its epidemic -
They sanctioned illicit gain and made usury their creed.
They legislated usury and followed compound interest.
غَضِبَwas angry اللّهُGod عليهمwith them فَرَضُوْاand they were content
رَبِّO my Lord زِدْهُمgive them more كلَّevery يومٍday غَضَبَاanger
God was angry with them, and they were content;
God became angry with them, so they have become
Lord, increase Your anger against them every day.
An object of God's growing anger day after day.
هالكٌdoomed منwhoever ظنّthinks ممّنamong those who يَعتدِيtransgresses
ويُعادِيand opposes اللّهَGod أنthat لنwill not يُغلبَاbe defeated
Doomed is whoever thinks—among those who transgress
Doomed is he who thinks that he who transgresses
And oppose God—that he will not be defeated.
And defies God will not be overcome!
وأضلُّand furthest astray النّاسِamong people فيin دنياهُhis worldly life مَنْthe one who
وَضَحbecame clear الحقُّthe truth فولَّىthen he turned away وأَبَىand refused
And furthest astray among people in his worldly life is he
The most astray of people in his worldly life is he who,
Who, when truth became clear, turned away and refused.
When the truth was clear, turned away and refused it.
