O banner of God, what a blessed banner!

And can your Lord's soldiers be hidden?

The angels shade it as it marches,

And ranks of prophets go before it.

When victory's two flanks grow dark,

It shines forth amid the banner's radiant battalions.

Battalions that ride the fates as steeds,

And make their strongholds in the sky.

They draw their swords, against which grow blunt

The striking edges of every keen, grooved blade.

A sacred struggle in which the divine signs hurl forth

    Every destroyer, swift to perish.

It cleaves the flanks of towering ships,

And sweeps away the swimmers in the sky.

Defenders of truth, repel every aggressor,

And turn the champions of falsehood from their babble.

And shield the people from the whims of men

Who abandoned them beyond the reach of hope.

The defenders cry out to them, now fallen

Into a wolf-haunt resounding with howls.

Fierce in guile, ablaze with ferocity.

You see it, despite the watch and precautions,

Relentless of fang, drinking deep of blood.

It raided before the bright stars disappeared,

And ravaged while the shepherds' night had not yet dozed.

By the life of the oath-breakers, we have kept faith,

Despite all the bitter pain of keeping faith.

Our nature, and the tradition of those whose heirs we are,

Among the forebears foremost in glory:

Leaders in valor and heralds of truth,

They raised glory as an impregnable edifice.

Its stamp of majesty fills you with awe.

And the star shyly averts its gaze from it.

The glory of remembrance in noble recompense.

If you do not build up your people when you build,

Then you and what you erect are bound for oblivion.

Guardians of the Nile, what will become of us if

A delegation of pretenders squanders the Nile?

And ward off from it the onslaught of fate.

We are sold, though no law has come to peoples

Sanctioning the sale or purchase of nations.

Our souls appraised at a high price?

Let no other peoples covet us!

For we are neither bondsmen nor bondwomen.

And how can rule be entrusted to the ignorant

When men of cunning do not understand the peoples?

If they brought calamity on Kinana when they came,

They were surely afflicted with a people too proud to yield.

    That pledges you sincere allegiance.

If burning thirst has undone us, this is

The hour for thirsty souls to drink their fill.
