Is this the justice they expounded at such length,

and which some among them went about boasting of and admiring?

Do they deem killing just, though it was never brought to them by

any scripture save what tyranny inspires and writes?

And tyranny has verses that, when they clasp

a powerful man's hands, keep striking at justice,

and a law abrogating what the hand of God ordained—

so every other law is condemned within it as false.

You took four lives for one, and forgot

blood for which the bloodstained earth wept through the night.

There, where the troops do not shun harm,

nor heed the eye that watches there.

And they resented nothing but the compassion stirred

by a stricken man who fell, parched and exhausted.

Alas for the man who poured water over him:

blood pouring from him mingles with the water's flow.

Shall we forget the souls they slew to gratify their spite,

and others now enduring torture in Denshawai?

Souls that wish death would assail them,

so they might follow those souls' footsteps and depart.

They spend the night communing with them; grief, like night,

has a darkness where one deep gloom cloaks another.
