You recovered, but love's stricken victim did not.

And you slept, while he spent the night bringing his companions to tears.

Was it at the slanderers' command that you killed a soul

that falls apart in anguish, its blood poured out?

Bring both your judgments to bear on the raptures of a love

with which you passed round a brimming cup of sorrow.

Do you recover from love's hangover without me,

while I rave over you in passion and longing?

You set down the cup when I raised mine,

gulping down a love whose taste I loathed.

I undertook the impossible, hoping my heart

might vie with you in forgetting love, but it could not.

And claims of love among people are false

if they do not drink the deadly poison.

So do not accept affection from people

    if their affection is hypocrisy.

I put the pretenders to an honest test,

and found neither decency nor virtue.

The advocates of evil agree upon it,

and expect no agreement in doing good.

When desire is at issue, they hurry forward,

but when it is guidance, they take to flight.

As though, on the morning they are told to march

toward the heights, they were held by a fetter or a bond.

Captives in the chains of ignorance, denied

release from them by their own character.

Wretched indeed are these people: they have defended no honor,

nor raised a pavilion for a good cause.

Do you not see the field for earnest effort among them—

how narrow it has grown, despite its breadth?

They ruined the nation when each left its care to the others,

and subjected it to division and discord.

And if I held authority over it,

I would make the seven layered heavens its abode.

But I am a man who has nothing

but a pen that melts, burning for its sake.

And the daughters of poetry avail nothing

    when evil engulfs the nations.
