ولاand not أنتyou ذوpossessing جِدٍّresolve ولاand not القومُthe men أبطالُheroes
ولا أنت ذو جِدٍّ ولا القومُ أبطالُ
Away with you, Abu Sufyan: the promise is not true,
To you, O Abu Sufyan, neither promise is truthful
Nor are you a man of resolve, nor are the men heroes.
Nor are you a man of valor, nor are the people heroes

فما تنقضي منكم همومٌ وأوجال
Ibn Mas'ud came to you with news of Yathrib,
The son of Mas'ud has brought you news of Yathrib
So worries and fears never leave you.
Yet worries and sorrows do not cease among you

خطوبٌ تَرامَى بالنّفوسِ وأهوال
At Badr, beneath Muhammad's banner, you face
At Badr, under the banner of Muhammad
Calamities that fling souls about, and terrors.
Are calamities that target lives and terrors

There are men, O Ibn Harb, who seem,
There, O son of Harb, are people who when
When the wind of battle rages, like ghouls:
The wind of hatred blows are ferocious lions

Troops with victorious Ali at their head,
Soldiers victorious through Ali,
Surging amid terror, ever-ranging through peril.
Fierce in the heat of battle, brave amid horrors

وَعِدْهُ جزاء الإفكِ لا حبّذا المال
Let the man go sowing alarm with falsehoods,
Leave a man to spread lies fearfully
And promise him the wage of falsehood—what vile money!
And promise him the reward of slander is not wealth

He hesitated, fearing in you the nature of a promise-breaker
He hesitated, fearing you would blame a deserter
Who speaks, yet neither promise nor word is faithful.
Saying there is neither a true promise nor good faith

وطارت به في الجو هوجاء مجفال
He clung to a pledge in Ibn Amr's words,
Hold on to the secure pledge of Ibn Amr
And a headlong, skittish mount flew with him through the air.
And it carried him through the air angrily buzzing

يقولُ جموعٌ ما تُعَدُّ وأرسال
He went on describing the unbelievers in terrifying terms,
He went on portraying the infidels with terrible detail
Saying, “Uncountable hosts, and bands upon bands.”
Saying countless hordes and detachments

Yet those hearts did not tremble, nor were they
Yet those hearts were not shaken, nor were they
Like others, quaking beneath the crash of terror.
Like others whose souls trembled with fear

فلاso not الجبنُcowardice مَنجاةٌdeliverance ولاnor البأسُvalor قَتَّالdeadly
فلا الجبنُ مَنجاةٌ ولا البأسُ قَتَّال
Men whose souls were filled with firmly anchored faith;
Men sincere in faith, their souls overflowing with it
For cowardice does not save, nor does valor kill.
So neither is cowardice an escape, nor valor a killer

Nor is death's draught unwelcome when taken with honor,
Nor is death unwanted if honor demands it
Nor is life's spring sought when humiliation is feared.
Nor life desired if humiliation is feared

They called to one another and said, “God suffices us; He
They called out: God is enough for us, He
Surely brings about whatever victory He wills for the guides.”
Does what He wills to grant victory to the guided

And al-Siddiq sent it forth, a steady rain of wisdom,
And the Truthful One sent it—a wise old she-camel—
From al-Faruq's mouth it poured in torrents:
Spewing from the mouth of the Farouq torrentially

“Muhammad, God will surely uphold His religion
Muhammad, God is the supporter of His religion
And make it prevail; truth is the sharpest, most decisive arbiter.
And its manifester, and the Truth is the clearest separator

They have an inescapable appointment, and a watering-place
They have an inevitable appointment and destination
Of death, where souls and appointed ends converge.
Of death engulfing souls and lifetimes

It is galling to us that there should be a saying
It pains us that it becomes an oft-repeated saying
Repeated by ignorant, babbling men,
Repeated by foolish ignorant people

Who say, ‘Had they not feared us, they would have come,’
Who say “If not for fear of us, they would have advanced
Yet ours is indeed swift, bold advance and forward movement.”
While we are the fierce, attacking ones”

And Abu Sufyan hastened, belying himself,
And Abu Sufyan lay, denying himself
And made his own soul witness how he schemed out of fear.
And making himself bear witness to his fear and plotting

He said, when the men had reached Majannah,
Saying “The men have come upon trouble
“O our people, hold back, for we are surely astray.
Oh people, wait! We are lost”

وشرُّ عَتادِ الحربِ حَدبُ وإمحال
O our people, we see this year is barren,
Oh people, we see the year is unfruitful
And the worst provision for war is drought and dearth.
And the worst equipment for war is emaciation and hardship

So return in a favorable year of plenty,
So return to a prosperous, fertile year
And do not approach battle, for those men are vipers.”
And do not approach these chaotic people

God's army advanced, and their army fell back,
The army of God advanced and their army retreated
And in it were no fearsome equals or peers.
And none remain who can be feared and equaled

And how can proud, intrepid warriors be matched by men
And where are those hunted allies whose
Whose own allies desert them when battle comes?
Supporters have, in times of valor, been slaughtered

Wretched allies indeed! They are still deceived
Evil are those allies who still fool them
By fancies like sleepers' dreams, and hopes.
With delusions like a dreamer’s hopes

Behold the world: its edifice has been rebuilt,
Behold, it is rebuilt, the world given
And a new design and image have been fashioned for it.
A new design and form unlike before

So its ways are not the ways once approved
No longer the way its ancient people wished
By its sons who perished, nor is its condition as before.
They are gone and it is not as it was

Its dust-covered past of misdeeds has faded away;
The past is buried in its evil
So those are its remnants: graves and ruins.
A ruin and relic of crumbled walls

Shall people's hearts remain in its darkness,
Can people’s hearts remain in its darkness?
While coverings and locks reinforce one another over them?
With veils and locks preserving its idols

It is the light—God's light—that fills His earth,
It is the light, the light of God, filling His land
So ages and generations find guidance in it.
So generations find guidance within it

The liberator of captives has come, freeing souls
The emancipator of captives has come to free souls
Whose own dispositions are their fetters and shackles.
From the fetters and shackles binding them
