O oryx of al-Liwa, enough terror for me and for love!
Can we not be safe, for one day, from rejection and estrangement?

Does your rejection bring a raid each day,
amid whose terrors I plunge into blood-red deaths?

وَحَسبُكِ ما أَتلَفتِ مِن نَفسِهِ نَصرا
Grant safety to a captive who seeks peace in love;
and what you have ravaged of his soul is victory enough for you.

Has a valiant army of charms deceived you—
one that, when it rallies, pursues slaughter and capture relentlessly?

And I kept lamenting trial after trial,
until your eyes brought the greatest trial of all.

Leave me to what I face from Time, and preoccupy
with your love one who does not preoccupy mankind and Time.

I have given my youth and gray hair, my longing and love,
to Egypt, though I have not paid Egypt love's due.

A land whose earth and sky bestowed on me
my life, and whose Nile made pearls flow in my mouth.

You want it as beauty and splendor to adorn you,
making fair women, leafy groves, and flowers jealous.

And I reckon it glory and preeminence for Egypt,
for which cities spend the night lovesick and burning.

No event, ever, however terrifying its impact,
can erase love for her or rival her in renown.

She is Time, or something resembling its vicissitudes,
its binding and unbinding, its folding and unfolding.

Dynasties of every kind pass through her, and down fall
the nights' lessons around her pyramids, one after another.

I picture her as eternity's pages, and each dynasty
writes upon her a line from its own tales.

She has, in History's hand, what can never be folded away:
lessons that have filled minds with wonder.

As though her hills were a pulpit for kingdoms,
on which Time stands, heaping rebukes upon them.

protecting them from ignorance's madness or undoing sorcery.

As though the Nile's water held a veiled secret
that brings the deluded back under the rule of calm deliberation.

Take heed of Time's lessons, O Egypt, and bear witness
against it, and grow more patient amid its marvels.
