O Hind, this is gain enough for you, and it suffices you:

indeed, He who guides souls has guided you.

You approached, shyly lowering your veil,

hiding yourself, while the Prophet saw you.

“And are you not Hind?” You said bashfully, “Yes.”

Do not be ashamed, for God has healed you.

You treated your heart with Islam, and it recovered,

and washed your mouth clean of that crime.

Do not recall the liver you handled,

but it resisted you; perhaps it will forget you.

And leave the necklaces of Badr's day, and put on

your ornaments amid the joy of the manifest conquest.

Guidance has led you along Muhammad's path,

so spare the venerable elder your harm.

He was not deluded when you reviled him

and reached your utmost in evil conduct.

You said, “Kill him!” And had their crowd obeyed you,

shed blood would have flowed because of you.

O Hind, truth is too mighty in its onslaught

to fear you or fear your father.

There is none like him, if you seek a father in this world,

O daughter of Utbah, among fathers who would care for you.

Whoever offers the world cannot match

what your hands have offered before the Messenger.

Why your apology, when the gift is generous,

and all your desire is for reverence of God?

You pledged allegiance to the most rightly guided of all in his way,

and accepted him as a man of noble character who accepts you.

and seeks refuge in noble, pure character.

Whatever provocations reach him from those

who act ignorantly, he neither reproaches nor complains.

Were you surprised when, as a guide, he mentioned indecencies,

then forbade such acts to the women who came to him—and to you?

If you marvel at honor being surrendered cheaply,

though it is all of life—such indeed

is freeborn women's honor, as you know; only

women other than they, and other than you, accept fornication.

They guard it and drive away from its inviolable bounds

the lusts of every deadly deceiver.

The woman among them whom hunger is killing refuses

to have it bought with the treasures of kings.

And she turns away, averting herself, jealously guarding her person,

even if her bed were the heights of the celestial spheres.

The shame of fornication disgraces faces, and its evil

strikes lands and their people with destruction.

O Hind, God has indeed carried out His judgment,

so He spared you His grievous punishment and protected you.

You have been given your provision of piety and guidance,

so take provisions—glory be to Him who saved you!
